Ok, before people judge from the title this isn't me moaning on or anything :P

Basically. I'm doing a BTEC National Certificate in IT at college at the moment, but, as much of a geek as I am and as much as I love computers, I can't see myself enjoying a career in IT. So I think my plan is to ditch the BTEC in IT after I (hopefully) pass this year and go on to another college (Cleveland College of Art & Design) to do a BTEC in Photography which I would have been doing already if New College Durham, my current college, did that! Instead I got told by them to do graphic design and impliment photography into that as much as possible, which I didn't want to do.

Anyway, for me to do this course I personally feel I need to develop in skill and understanding a lot. Especially since I have to make up a portfolio to show the college if I want to get on this course, I already have some ideas but I need to build on them before I do them. Landscapes are cool, but I would much rather prefer to shoot photos related to fashion or general portrait photography.

Main question, after all this rambling, is can anyone show me useful resources, guides etc.? I do pretty much understand the basics of my camera but I need to know more :/

Thanks.

I did a BTEC in IT Support, did pretty well in it, but I don't want a career in IT now.

I wouldn't have thought you need much to join a BTEC photography course, I just went a long and signed up for the IT one.

How far are you into the BTEC? I did the same course but specialized in development during the second year - very easy course and came out with triple distinction even though I skipped most of the lessons!

If you're not too far into it then changing might be ok but if not I'd just finish it, worth getting the qualification as you'll probably find it difficult to make a living with photography - at least then you'll have something to fall back on.

Now I have a degree in Software Engineering and do the photography as a hobby so its all good!

I've got 10 years as a Photography pro behind me, and no 12 years as an IT pro.
I make shed loads more money in IT than I ever did in photography, but photography was [and still is] more interesting.

Learn your optics from Michael Langford's "Basic Photography". Its an old book, but that stuff doesn't change. 1/f=1/v+1/u all that sort of stuff. Take loads of pics all the time and when you aren't taking pics, be looking at them. And art in general especially where you live, you should be in the Baltic all the time.

I've still got several mates working as pro's and its getting tougher out there.

Guess what, Im currently doing a BTEC National diploma (IT Practitioners) and I'm studying Photography at uni later this year at BCU.

I was very worried I wouldn't get in because I didn't have an 'art' background educationally. But BCU still invited me along for an interview and looked at my portfolio instead of my grades.

Sheffield hallam however declined me instantly.

My point is don't be put off like I was!
