Hi again,

and yes its another problem...

well it all started when i tried to open a JPG on paint and it said to me paint does not recognize this format

i then opened a RAW file on my raw viewer thing its like the windows fax viewer plug in, i right clicked and went to edit and then said please browse through to get your program, and when i right clicked the image it did not have the 'open with' option

i then went into photoshop with my RAW file and tried to convert it to a JPEG just to find that it had actually saved it as a DNG even though i specified jpeg

I must be a pain in the backside i know

but thanks for all you help everyone !!

Dave

PMSL! Ah welcome to the joys of photography. :D

What you need to do I think Dave is get some decent software first to handle your pics. You'll get free evaluation versions you can download of stuff like Paint Shop Pro and Photoshop. For RAW files you can download evaluation versions of Lightroom.

No rush mate, we'll be about when you're ready - Rome in a day and all that.

1st thing. Turn it off and then on again.

2nd thing ...... it seems like Photoshop is opening files for you, so, Haay - you're half way there. There's no way PS is automatically doing anything, let alone saving files as .dng. You must be pressing buttons to achieve that.

Give us some more clues and we'll give you more help

Microsoft Paint can open jpg and jpeg's no problem. I honestly don't know why you'd want to though, it's the most basic editing program available.

i then opened a RAW file on my raw viewer thing its like the windows fax viewer plug in, i right clicked and went to edit and then said please browse through to get your program, and when i right clicked the image it did not have the 'open with' option
To get the "open with" right click context menu, hold down the shift key whilst right clicking.

I would suspect that you don't have a program associated with opening RAW files as default. To remedy this - open Windows Explorer, click Tools>Folder Options>File Types, browse down the list until you find your RAW file extension (CRW for Canon, NEF for Nikon) and find the "open with" then click Change and browse to the application you want it to open with.

i then went into photoshop with my RAW file and tried to convert it to a JPEG just to find that it had actually saved it as a DNG even though i specified jpeg
Not quite sure what you have done here but DNG is the Adobe Digital Negative format. I would suggest using File>Save As (after you have finished editing the photo of course so as to retain jpeg quality - never keep saving jpeg files as jpegs) and then choose jpeg from the drop down menu
