My Canon 400d Died...

Considering the light use its had I am surprised. It turns on internittently while occasionally it fires the built in flash and wont let you access the menu or playback any images. I've replaced the CF card, The CR2016 Battery, The main battery and its still the same. I only discovered this while checking the kit the night before a shoot for some engagement pictures for our god-daughter. Needless to say I,m not very chuffed! I have been building my outfit for about two years and have some rather expensive glass which means I,m reluctant to change vendors now but NIKON d3 and DS are looking very tempting... Has anyone else experienced this fault? I have already put it into jessops for repair and I,m not sure its still under warranty... and I,m worried about the cost of repair. If its too much( IE >£200 I am going to dump all my Canon kit on ebay and move to Nikon!

I had a second hand 400D from ebay, and from the marks on the box, it had taken a knock in transit. Unfortunately this meant that it wouldn't focus properly.

I took it to Jessops to repair and that cost around £100 if memory serves me correctly, with a new 6 month warranty included. Unfortunately when it arrived back it was giving me err99 messages!!! I gave it back to them and, obviously, they repaired it again for free.

Well, I say 'repaired'. I asked what the matter had been with it both times and they weren't too sure. All they done was take it apart, check everything and put back together again, and on the second time it worked. I guess it could've been a loose connection or bit of jagged solder or something, I'm not sure.

But, as maligned as they are, I can recommend Jessops for your repair. There's also that place in Stoke (official Canon vendors) that comes highly recommended although I can't remember the name off the top of my head.

Surely its going to cost more to offload all your Canon stuff compared to the repair bill.

Whilst I can feel your frustration, if you've been building your kit up for 2 years I think the old 'cutting your nose to spite your face' may be in action here!

In Nikon gives you something Canon doesn't of course you should, but if not you might want to consider an XXD, 1D or 5D model if you already have your set of lenses.

Canon cameras are just as reliable as Nikon ones, you've just been unlucky. If this was anything other than an isolated incident the problems would be all over the internet. There's no sense in changing over.

I feel your pain but look on the bright side, it gives you the perfect excuse to get a new Canon 7D!

I have just bought a secondhand 400d off Ebay. It comes with ANOTHER 18-55mm zoom. I really dont need that so I thought I might offer it as a prize for a competition. Anoyone got any ideas for that?
