Im still getting to grips with my new 400d, so I thought I would try an HDR shot.
I press the Av+- button and use the wheel to slide the Exposure slider thing to the left.

The problem is wherever I set that slider, whether it be +2, -2 or 0, every picture is exactly the same. Am I missing something very important?

I dont know what the problem is there but why not use the cameras Bracketing setting (AEB) ? Page 76 of the manual refers. It is quicker than setting the exposure compensation for each shot and reduces the risk of camera movement/shake.

If you're using aperture priority, the camera will adjust the settings to expose correctly.
If you're using manual mode, well then I don't know what the problem is.
Shoot in raw and adjust aperture in your photo editing software. Its a lot easier :D

This might sound obvious but I presume you are taking one shot at -2, one shot at 0 and finally one shot at +2. If you put the EC at any of these setting and take three shots without adjusting the EC between shots they will all look the same. Exposure compensation will work in Av, it has to else there would be little point in having it. As Ugs has said, why not use the bracketing feature of you camera.

OK, I tried to use the AEB setting and set it to -2,0,+2 and took the three pictures.
The LCD showed that the bracketing was working, but here are the pictures I took, in the order I took them.

Im starting to think my camera is broken...

what mode are you shooting in?

Exif shows all 3 shots were 1/30 @ f/2.8 ISO 100 in Tv Mode, you need to set the camera to AEB for it to happen automatically.

follow instructions:
press menu button
go to 2nd menu page, go down to 1st line "AEB"
press set
turn thumbwheel next to shutter to right, watch green dot seperate into 3, outer 2 move out on the scale, take them to the end (-2, +2)
press set to accept the AEB setting
press menu to get out of menu

next bit is optional, but makes life easier as it will cause camera to take 3 shots in quick succession rather than having to press shutter 3 times:
press 2nd button down on right of screen
select middle icon "continuous shooting"
press set button

ok?, ready to role
put camera in Av or Tv, aim shoot fire. If you used the continuous setting then just hold shutter button down until all 3 shots have fired, otherwise 3 shots needed.

did that work?

Hmm - exif also shows that he was using Exposure Bias Value on images 2 and 3 at -2EV and +2EV....

It does, strange that the actual exposure is the same for all three

I took some bracketed shots just this morning (havent processed them yet). This is the first time I have used AEB and noticed that the info in the viewfinder stated F8 for all 3 shots although the Exposure Bias did indeed work and the seperate images are as expected.
Maybe the 400D reports via the Exif the set Exposure and takes no notice of the Bias?
I will load the bracketed images into Bridge and see what they report.

Yep the exif reports the F8 as originally set for all images. The compensation is reported in the Exposure Bias line.

So - it appears he DID bracket properly but there may be some problem with his camera.

Surely if he's in Tv mode with the lens wide open (f2.8) the camera can't possibly bracket the exposure because the shutter is locked at 1/30 (Tv mode) and the lens can't open up any more 'cos it's already wide open:bang:

Gofer's got a good point there - it could well be that at the given shutter speed and wide open there still wasn't enough light for a correct exposure (and the shots suggest that was the case) so bracketing wasn't going to work anyway.

Well done gofer...I think you've cracked it!!

If he is already underexposed at wide open there is nowhere else to go!!:thumbs:

... mystery solved - well done :)

ahha, i tried it and it seemed to work, now i feel stupid...

Would have thought there would have been something in the manual though. I guess i got to keep playing with it and finding out what i can do now i know it works.

Thanks again for all the help with this, I was starting to worry the camera was broken.

You should find that in Tv mode the aperture value will flash in the viewfinder and on the rear display if the camera can't get a good exposure.

Thats the way I am doing it. Getting out there and taking images at all sorts of settings and seeing what they are like when I upload to my PC. No need to take notes on each shot nowadays either - its all in the exif :)

As far as I can see your camera has given you three different exposures although it is hard to pick from these three shots but it is there.
