gutted is an understatement!!!

It says 'shutter release' is the problem as it wont press down and refuses to do anything!

the camera is 4 months old almost :o

*off to ring them*

Bad luck. Still warranty should cover cost, its sods law that you needed it though!

Hope all goes well.

Steve

thanks steve - im so gutted i want to kill someone (or just inflict serious damage to nikon people lol)

i take seriously good care of it so cant understand how/why !!! :(

mabey it heard me saying about upgrading yesterday

Have you taken the battery out, lens off, card out.. everything..then put it all in again?

depending on how technical you are I found this on Twitter:

I Solve It... Hi Guys, I had the same problem few months ago, after reading some similar posts and trying all suggestions I finally took my D40X to Nikon, they spent two weeks in diagnostics to finally said that will cost me 150$ and 6 more weeks, I got my camera back and I try it and it was working perfectly.. but...yesterday, after some months I got the same error, and here is the solution .
I took off the 8 screws at the botton plate and the screw hidden at the edge near the batery (you have to take off the battery).
After taking off the botton plate I saw a red gearwheel and I move it in any direction.. then I put the battery and Viola!!.. worked... then I put back the botton plate... seems that the gear is part of the mechanics of the shutter that probably was stuck.
I Hope this helps, but remember my D40X was out of guaranty, because of that I dared to open it.
Regards

There are more detailed fixes further down :)

Have you been back to the shop to see what they say? As people have been saying take everything off and put it back. Did you do anything prior to the error happening like maybe change a lens or something? Have you an alternative battery and lens you can try?

so im back :)

i went back to the shop and said what ar you goin gto to.... they offered me to send it away for 3 weeks (no as i need this camera!)

or a new one.... i said - erm what you think!? (my breakdown would be void - i didnt actually care)!!

sooo they didnt have any D60's in stock - nor did the other 2 shops round them so i paid another £150 and got the nikon d5000 which is pretty :)

its currently charging up and i cant wait to have a play

2 's though

do i still need af-s lenses??? or cani use af on this camera???

2nd - does anyone have monthly insurance for breakdown - or will my photoguard cover this?? (i am sending off for the policy brochure as its all online :s )

:)

You still need AF-S (or equivalent), I'm afraid.

damn

ahhh well i still like this one though

i almost went for the d3000? i think!!? and they would have give me some money back however i didnt want to downgrade!

eta also im such a twit.... i took the camera back to a clueless woman who didnt ask for the 18-55 kit lens back..... just the camera. however i owned up to having it!!

im too honest for my own good

Well at least you are sorted now. The D5000 sort of sits between the D60 and D90 with the D3000 really as a D60 replacement. It should be better than you D60 but not sure how :) Shame that D90 money wasn't an option then you could have had that focusing motor!

i did ask how much it was and there would have been about £830 so putting over £300 there and then i seriously couldnt do it

The iso goes upto 3200 which was a big + point for me - its not that pretty though with the screen - however saves getting make-up all over it :bonk: (my d60 had a far whack on the screen)

Dayum!
That can be so frustrating. Talking of which I need to get some insurance quotes and sort my self out. Is there a price comparison site for photography equipments like confused.com?

id have asked what to do between the d3000 and the d5000 before i bought if i wernt stood in argos like a twerp offering a lens back i could have kept :)

good site - good members :)

thanks :)

this is a free one but its hopefully going to lead on to business.!

its photographing kids so not my area however a learning curve!

need to figure this camera out before then

know that feeling after changing from sony to canon recently OMG nightmare

haha i took it out before and just messed about with the setting.... iso cranked upto 3200  just to to see what it can do!

so far i like it - no make-up on the screen (makes a change)! just hope this one dosent die!!!

going to look into nikons 2 year warranty too. didnt take that out when i got my d60 :s

Hey, thats great you'll love the D5000!! Not bad at all, considering it cost you £150 to upgrade.

i adore it!!!!

its far bettter than my d60 (sorry d60 people) haha!!!

i used the video camera yesterday after sayin gi would never use it!? im in love

great camera and wont change this for a long time now :)

just need to sort out some monthly insurance :)

Yes, its got the sensor of the D300/D300S and D90, so you're getting a helluva lot of quality for the money. The D40 had an excellent sensor, but the 40X/60/3000, nah not so good. 40X was not as sharp as my D50(same sensor as D40, you see) The video isn't too bad, the mono mic is better than I thought. Yes, get some good insurance cover! :)

any reccomendations for insurance???

i have 30 days then this covers gone!!! :(

well, have to say I've never bothered with insurance...a chap I know insures his through Jessops (apparently it doesn't matter if you didn't originally buy it from them) and he said it cost him about £60 to cover his D90 against accidental and technical...

im with photoguard i think they may cover me so i'll check te policy - but i just took that out purely for the fact i was at dog and horse shows and was bothered in case anyone decided to sue me!!! lol

I too am with Photoguard as I have heard they are good on honouring any legitimate claims, not that I have made any. Some companies do put on restrictions so watch out, like leaving gear in a car/ at a function unattended or taking overseas etc, so read what the insurance actually covers or does not cover more importantly.

thanks :)

i will check it out....i neeed to get a hard copy as its all in an email at the moment!
