Yes
Had to go to Hospital this morning with the missus as she had two hospital appointments, one early morning and the second a few hours later. Hospital is in the City Centre, so it was not worth coming back home after the first appointment. I knew it was going to be a lovely day, so I thought I would take some photos. I would be pushing my missus who is in a wheel chair, so I needed to travel light as I had other things to carry. My newly acquired DSLR was most deffo out of the question, as was the Fuji X10 and the Panasonic TZ55 with its flip screen, makes it too chunky for a tight jeans pocket. Could not use my phone as the battery dies very quickly as it is very old now.

I had a rummage in the cupboard and dug out an old Canon Ixus 82 IS, it belonged to my missus years ago, but got tossed aside years ago. It is really tiny and slim, and slipped in a tight jeans pocket with ease, I could not tell it was there. Anyway, I took it with me this morning and got some photos. It is only a tiny sensor with 8.0 mega pixels, but the images it produced are pretty good. In good light it is certainly a good camera to have in my pocket, considering it is now worthless :)

Strange thing though, on the Camera body it says Ixus 82 IS , but in the file data it says Ixus 80 IS ..

LOL your thread subject suggests its was going to be about choosing your very best camera you have and the shots were worthless :D
Sorry for being a little Tinker, and misleading you

I was surprised how good the photos were from the little old Canon compact, the skin tones of my missus were pretty good and true to life. It also captured the City centre buildings pretty well also, the sky and clouds came out pretty good also. I just can't figure out why this camera was tossed aside and forgotten about

I have an 82 IS, it's a lovely shade of blue :D

I'd rather use it than a mobile phone and at least it has a VF which is useful if the rear screen can't be seen. I used to carry mine about when even MFT was too big but since getting a Panasonic LF1 the Ixus has been retired. Not worth selling though even if anyone wanted it.

Just on the filenames... I think that the 82 IS was exclusive to Jessops? Maybe? As far as I know the only difference is the colour. I don't know if they were all blue but it does stick in my mind that I could only get a blue one from Jessops. So, my guess is that an 80 IS is what it is, painted a special colour and given a new designation and sold through Jessops, maybe :D

Yes it was Jessops we bought ours from, and it is in blue :). Images look really nice on our large TV, they have a good colour also. Can't recall ever getting any images printed from the little Canon. Must admit it does give a true representation of what I saw, and it is fun to use. It is so tiny I took photos without people even noticing what I was doing, as it is a lot smaller than my phone. Looks like there is a little more life left in the old camera, before it goes in the bin :)

No, no, no - it should never go in the bin:(!* My first digital camera was a Canon Ixus 105 - also a lovely shade of blue:)! I take it out a lot for the above-mentioned reasons and I've got some great (to me, anyway) pics with it!

These little Ixus guys can sure pack a punch:canon:;)!!

(*I run a home for unloved, old cameras:).)

Lol :)

I have an even older Powershot, I think it was from about 2000, images are reasonable but it is very clunky. Still can't bring myself to throw it out :)

At one time four of my family had 82 IS's. I don't do video but my families videos look fine on a pc. I have a lovely leather case for mine :D

As the old saying goes; the best camera is the one you have with you.

I still have my old Fuji 2800 somewhere, can't bring myself to bin it.

I found my old Olympus 2020Z the other day, that took great images but it must be at least 12 or 13 years old now.

I'm surprised. All my old digicle cameras just stop working after about 5 years. Canon IXUS, Pentax Optio compact, Canon G9. And I'm not treating them cruel. Honest.
For me:
Pentax ME Super purchased in 1981 suffered a terminal shutter failure after twenty years of use.
Canon EOS 50D suffered terminal shutter failure after c.250k exposures and seven years.
Olympus u1030 SW had a seal failure whilst on holiday in the Red Sea. So that died, but not before we got some underwater shots. We'd had it about five years.

All the other cameras I've had are still alive, though my Canon G12 has a scratch on the front element which I suspect was caused by the motorised lens cover slats. Shame really because I quite like the G12 and the scratch is only noticeable when shot against the light, but won't buy another as the lens scratch seems to be a common issue. The EOS-M that I bought because it was really cheap at Argos has pretty much replaced the G12.

Re tight jeans and "pocket cameras", I am so pleased I was given a free case with my Canon G7X. It's not the kind of thing I would have chosen but now I've got it I love it. Goes over my shoulder underneath my jacket.

Yes we keep those less valued camers don't we.

Anything that is of value is probably sold to finance new kit.

I have a Canon powershot XXX, which I used a lot several years ago, I won't sell it as it's a good back up if the newer kit goes t*ts up.

My late Dad had a Pentax Optio or similar. Quite old now (camera) useful but so slow. Tiny screen but has sentimental value.

Notwithstanding my Olympus EPL5, refurbished by Olympus (£90) but it was a pretty good bit of kit, value now so low it again is better as a back up rather than a little cash.

My camera museum includes a Yashicamat TLR, and a Pentax P30. The latter I occaisionally run a film through.

Trouble with cases for Compact Cameras, makes them even less compact. But I do agree, the case does look good :)

Got a couple of old compacts. Those are the ones that can be thrown in the air on a timer, attached to a car etc, the sort of things where they are expendable, but very useful because if it.

Got mine with me always

Good to get those old cameras out to be used, some of those old cameras can still produce a good image, even some dinky little ones :)

At one time, I used an iXus 70. Now that was a seriously compact camera - near enough the same volume as that classic film spy camera, the Minox C...

Yep, nice neat and small, and producing a reasonable image too. Tuck em in a tiny pocket, not in the long forgotten about cupboard :-)

Just a quick snap with the little Canon Ixus this morning, while walking the dog..

Another quick snap with the Little Canon Ixus, it was easier to use the Canon as my phone is too big and bulky lol

They do seem a little underexposed and washed out? Was that a jpeg? (I don't know if the Ixus 80/82 does raw?)

I have a Medion compact which predates my 82 IS. It's very simple and apart from the usual buttons on the back it only has two controls, on/off and the shutter button. I like cameras like this as they take me back to the basic film cameras I started with. My first camera had two controls, a switch to select sunny or cloudy and the shutter button.

Here's my Medion...

And my pocket camera family.

The Panasonic LF1 is too easy to turn on and I'm therefore nervous when it's in my pocket in case the lens extends at an inappropriate moment.

Medion pictures straight out of the camera can have colours that are way off so I usually pass them through PS.

I cropped and printed this next one so that it fills an A4 sheet and it looks very good :D

I have a soft spot for cameras like this.

On my image I added - exposure compensation as I thought the image would over expose, and tweaked the Contrast..Maybe I should have just left it set to my colours Vivid

@odd jim No RAW option on the little Ixus, don't think many of these little old Cameras had this option..

Must be the most stupid design of switch around, especially for a pocketable camera. Mine only lasted a couple of weeks, when the lens motor packed up. Was a blessing in a way, as then got a TZ60 which I much prefer, even though the sensor is slightly smaller, the performance doesnt seem to suffer at all.

Yes it does look good, I took a photo similar to yours. I took mine only yesterday while I was in the City Centre.

Taken on the Canon Ixus 82 is at full zoom. The little black speck at the top of the photo is not dust, it is a bird of some sort, probably a pigeon :)

Must admit if I'd tried a LF1 before I bought I wouldn't have. It's annoying. I can't pick the camera up without the lens extending but unfortunately mine still works so I have no excuse to buy a new and different one.

I have the 2800S - still works well but down to my last smartmedia card :-(

Used mainly for work (back in the day) but came alive on a 4 week Florida trip, which included a Shuttle launch, Disney World, SeaWorld etc etc. Never missed a beat.

I think I paid £299.99 for it at Techno in Bristol!

I have a Canon G1 and a 160 both going well still.

Yes, it's a shame as apart from that switch, it's a very good camera, especially at the current price.

Must admit, the TZ60 is not my bung it in my back pocket camera though, that dubious pleasure goes to a Panasonic FS-3, which is a similar size to the Canon Isus and just as capable as a stills camera, not sure the video is quite so good though.

Took mine while taking the missus to the Hospital, I was pushing a Wheel Chair up a hill and taking a photo one handed. It came out pretty well all things considered :)

But it's possible, I can't take a picture with my phone one handed :D

My 4 year old is always wanting to take pics, generally with my D700 or GX7, so I bought her a wee Nikon Collpix 4600, it was £8 and is great for her.. keeps mine safe too!!
