my ball head has locked up.....

Hi all,

My Manfrotto 488RC2 ball head has locked up. It is one of the ones that has two knobs: one for panning and one for lossening the whole thing. I can turn the panning knob, but it has no efect and i cannot move it. The other (more major problem) is I cannot move the "ball" of it. If i loosen the whol twisty thing, I can move it around and around, but not forwards or backwards. i took it into a camera shop and they had no idea and I would rather not have to pay to get it looked at.

try wd40?
my ballhead got a bit sticky and a bit of wd40 did the trick nicely

WD40 seems a good suggestion.

Possibly something has slipped down between the mount and the ball itself which prevents lateral movement. Is there anyway of opening it up?
