My 5d Mk2 is dead!

I've used the lens recently and it seems OK. It does make a 'salty' sound when you turn the zoom in a certain position, dosn't sound anything major but obviously if there's a way to clean it at all i'm all ears. Images appear fine, thankfully there was a filter on which protected the glass.

OK well if I can sell the camera faulty for 400-500 pounds then that will cover the cost of a new second hand one. But will it really fetch that much? The main circuit board is apparently fried, the mirror is locked up because of it, how could it possibly be worth anything?

It depends what state the camera is in, if it's clean outside and in the mirror box it'd be up to you whether or NOT to include details of what happened to it and how much you had been quoted to repair it.
As long as you include things like 'sold for parts/spares and repairs only' 'no return' 'sold as seen' then there should be no come back on it.
Some people have the skills, time and tools to do these repairs themselves and I'd guess that at least 50% of what you were quoted for the repair would be labour costs.

Take a look at this ebay auction. A water damaged 5D mkI with no box/lens/accessories; opening bid £0.99, ended at 8:20pm on a Sunday, sold for £345.00

If you're absolutely honest about the condition, the buyer can't complain about that. Whether you mention the Canon repair quote, however, is entirely up to you.

Oh I meant to say, see what happened to your camera, That's probably what the salt and moisture is doing to your lens too, I'd have it cleaned/serviced asap.

I decided to pay for the repair. I thought this was the best route, as the external side of things looks fine. Canon will repair the insides for £850 with a guarantee, which is a good price and cheaper than buying another one. If I don't like when it comes back I can always sell it on as a mk2 with new internal parts and a guarantee and probably make more than what I payed for the repair.
