Cheese on toast?
And is that Worcester Sauce splashed on the top?
You're making me hungry even at this time of night!

I really like the close-up focus on this one. It makes you look closer to work out what it is.
DoF is working well for me too

I'm a bit undecided about the oof bit of bread on the bottom right.
I look at it and think it adds a bit of interest, then I look again and I find it distracting . . . on balance though, I think I like it - the shot might be a bit too flat without.

For a last minute, late shot I'm very impressed. I just hope it hadn't gone cold by the time you'd finished with the camera and got to eat it.

I'll be honest, only for Sarah mentioned cheese on toast I was struggling with what this was. I like the idea of a macro, but a couple of things I'm not sure about: Firstly, and you know about this, but obviously the signature kinda spoils the pic. But secondly I'm not sure a macro style for cheese works here? So I'm putting it down to the content as opposed to the photo, because the quality of the shot itself is excellent. Excellent idea though.

Cheese on toast, yummy ;)

I think the DoF is spot on and disagree that it's not a good subject for macro, but the OOF bread bottom right is distracting me too much. I think the nicely toated crusty edge would have given it more depth.

Good interpretation though

Thanks guys, it isn't Macros perse, it's me with my telephoto lens on, zoomed in
I have a couple of shots with it zoomed out, but this worked best.
Will rem crusty bits of OOF bread for future, as I hadn't spotted it til Sarah mentioned *blush* woops.
And Sarah, it did go kinda cold...But I ate it anyway :p

Bruja, there werent any crusty edges. I'm picky with food and don't like crusty crusts! Have to be soft

Thanks for the comments.

This week's task is beating me, no ideas whatsoever!

I looove cheese on toast and this has me salivating!

I like food close ups and this appeals to me

I like the dof and the detail of that sauce flowing across the cheese :)

If I'd make a change it'd be to lose the blue edge bottom left :)

Now I want cheese on toast - damn :)

I agree with Jill - good subject, nibble off the bit of bread at the front.

No crusts - you'll never have curly hair.:lol::lol:

I have curly hair enough as it is, Jean

Right, here is this weeks AWFUL, AWFUL submission[you don't need to comment this week, it is merely an entry to stop me from not entering]
This is more PP work than photographical. I really struggled this week, and hadnt realised it was Friday either! :(

Actually, now thinking I might aswell not even enter a submission this week it's that bad, and I KNOW it is, it was a two minute jobby[once I finally found the word exposed and not 'exposure' or the other variations]

As requested I won't comment on the last photo... ok I will! I don't think it's as awful as you're saying. But everyone is allowed a filler. Good on you for not skipping the week I say

Hi Shorty, Food shot is OK, took me a minute to work out what I was looking at but now I see it, I REALLY want some cheese on toast.

Don't beat yourself up about this weeks, I'm sure I've had worse and full marks for getting a shot in even though you are struggling. Can I ask what your process was for the shot, just thinking someone might be able to give a bit of advice.

If its any consolation, Im struggling too.

Hmmmm not your best I think Shorty - but the idea is cool :) and the gradual change in exposure meets the theme :D

I think it would improved by the loss of the watermark (which muddles it a bit) and I wouldn't worry about getting it in on time ever :D

Its Sunday, I have a trip to my mums in Crawley in an hour and I STILL have no idea what to do for this week and no time :) Its gonna be late! :D

Food - I like it apart from the bit of bread at the front that others have already mentioned. It made me think nom nom nom though which is exactly what a food shot should do!

I agree with everything John says above - particularly the bit in bold :D

Thanks guys, will see if I can lose the sig[been on my feet, literally, since 8.30 this morning and only just sat down/got home] so I'm pretty pooped and just wanna collapse and sleep!

My process, tbh I can't even rem. I IDEA I had was to find the word EXPOSED, which I did, and then completely overexpose the rest of the shot, leaving exposed at the right...exposure[which I did using the lassoo tool] but when I completely blew it, it basically, well, it WAS just a white page with the word 'exposed' and it was nowhere near a photograph, and just like I placed text in the middle of a white blank document....Carp.
So I upped the brightness in this shot, instead of exposure...Does that help anyone?

Right, now I go collapse n sleep!

says it for me, the only complaint i have about this week is your watermark is distracting from the text :P

I've replaced the pic, but forgot what editing I did, so the WB is off, and it isn't exactly the same. Woops! But sig removed n replaced with hopefully less invasive one!

Not your best shot, but I think calling it "AWFUL AWFUL" is being far too harsh :)

It's an interesting idea and the fading on the rest of the sentence has potential.
Maybe if you'd given it a bit more context . . . words on a laptop screen (which I know you can do well) or printed out but showing the piece of paper on a desk etc. it might have worked better.

Personally, I think you need to lose the watermark completely on this one because it's competing too much with the words. However, it's still a long way from being as terrible as you think it is - and if it's any consolation I was late this week too.

Shorty I feel your pain...:(

When it don't come it's a real pain, and the more you panic the worst it gets...

I'm sorry but the food was not your best shot so far, as for the Expose shot it ok and you got it in so, so well done you didn't fall behind with your 52s.

So look forward to this weeks theme and give it your best shot...

I agree, especially with the not worrying. I've had at least a couple of filler weeks and it's difficult to be consistent with so many theme variations.

So chin up and on to the next ;)

Right, this week my brain failed me more than anything, I found trying to find an actual defintion/meaning to 'mono' extremely difficult, infact I still didn't get one. So just stuck with the boring old 'monochrome' it's the only thing I could see there being a relation to :(

Right, and this week, I have bored you all with a Self Portrait...Kinda :P
3845625152_3a4fea2a2b.jpg

Very brave of you to submit a self portrait (even if you have hidden most of your face). It's not something that I'm ready to do.

Things I like about it :

The mono conversion works really well.
(I'll be interested to see if anyone comes up with a different take on mono. So far we all seem to have gone for that interpretation)

I love the way that you've overexposed the area above your right shoulder so that it all fades into white.

Great textures and tones picked out in your hair. That works particularly well in B&W.

Things I'm not so sure about :

I'm struggling with the focal point a bit.
As most of your face is obscured I kind of feel like your camera / hand should be in focus rather than your hair / forehead. ( although I really do like the way that your hair has come out in mono)

The dark object in the background behind your left shoulder is distracting me slightly. I think I'd have a go at cloning that out to white (but that's probably far easier said than done :D)

Definitely not a boring interpretation. I know monochrome is the obvious answer but it really has worked on this image and I like it a lot.
BTW - Just in case I ever get brave enough to try a self portrait . . . was this taken in a mirror or did you use the timer on the camera?

Really nice shot. I love photos where there is an area of empty space to the side.
I reckon this shot would work with a variety of different b&w conversions..silver, sepia etc.
+1 on the background over your shoulder needing to be eliminated.
The backwards Nikon logo is a bit annoying to me though, but not much you can do about that.
All in all, a really nice shot.

Excellent photo! I love the way the background fades to white. The dark piece over your left shoulder and the backwards Nikon logo don't really bother me, but I probably agree with what people are saying about the focus. Possibly a larger DOF would have worked better.

All in all I still think it's excellent !

Ha thanks guys. I didn't want to to do self portrait, but it's only pic I've taken all week that suited mono, and I had tried out Lightroom for this[don't like it though, luckily only a trial!] so it was just one of their presets.

A little story behind the focus on the hair though....The 'self portrait' was actually to show people my hair as I've just re-dyed it
And its not so clear, cos I couldn't get a high enough shutter speed without using flash, which ruined the pic anyway.

Thanks for your comments though, quite surprised at the positive responses I must say :D

Exposed: I guess it's all been said (that's the trouble with commenting so late!) and I'm with the 'well-done-for-getting-it-in-and-it's-NOT-awful' brigade. I wouldn't like to try an count my 'filler' shots. :D

Mono: I really like this, despite the desecration of 'Nikon' :D I love the composition and the mono conversion - and your hair looks good too. :)

Jean

Now this is more like it...

there is something about this that is really good front my point of view...it what the viewer can't see that makes this shot for me, you have done a very nice conversion to mono and blown out all the un important details...I think its great...:clap::clap:

oh and it fits the theme...

:D That explains the hair thing then!

I don't know why you're surprised at the positive comments, there really is a lot to like about this one.

Well done on mono. Theres something I like about this shot

I agree entirely this is an enigmatic shot and reminds me of something from the 60s (in a good and stylish way :)

I like very much :D

I am so surprised by the good comments from last weeks photo. Thank you all! But sorry, it's back to dog shots for me this week. This week has just flown by and I've been so busy. I was only at the rescue today[not counting Monday when I was only there to carry on some training for one of the dogs] and I knew I'd not come up with anything.

JUST my luck though, had out a lovely GSD who usually ignores the paddling pool I've taken down there, but today, on THE windiest and coldest day....She decides to curl up inside it[with water] and attempt to sleep  freeezing. So anyway, this is one of the shots of her enjoying the British Summer.....Now that it's disappeared!!

I'm not immensly proud of this, I have to say. But there ya go

Great expression Leanne

NEVER apologise for going back to dog shots.
Your animal photography has gone from strength to strength. It's obviously a real passion for you, and I for one, would be happy with an animal shot every week.

I really like this one.
Completely agree with Cobra - great expression on his face and he actually seems to be enjoying that cold bath :cuckoo:

Given the rubbish standard of my dog photography I would be immensely proud if I'd taken this one.
The colours are spot-on, there's great texture in his coat and the whole thing has just got a lovely, relaxed feel to it. You make these shots look so easy.

If you could have got the focus on his eyes rather than his nose it would be pretty near perfect for me . . . but even with that one little niggle it's still very, very good

Like it, works better with the story behind it! Bless him/her though must've been chilly!

Good shot Shorty and whisker from being a great one.

Just sharper eye contact and the little blue something top right, other than that its ace.

DAMN, shoulda known better than to hope a bunch of togs wouldn't notice the missed focus

She MUST have ben chilly[despite panting loads] but she got a thorough towel dry once back in her kennel, and continued to lie on her bed after...Spoilt? Nooooo!

Didn't notice the blue something though, damn toys lying around, will get that cloned tomorrow and just replace the shot.

Sarah - thank you very much. I feel we're gonna have an on-going battle here

Really good photo. Why did someone have to go and mention the blue object though! I didn't notice it until then, and now it's distracting me. Think it needs to be cloned out alright. And to be honest, it doesn't scream out season to me, but all the same, I do like this ;)

Sarah - thank you very much. I feel we're gonna have an on-going battle here

:D

I don't think you realise just how good your dog shots are.
You've definitely developped your own style which I absolutely love - very relaxed and natural looking. In fact, I'm sure that I could pick one of your shots out of a pile of other dog photos.

You've caught a great expresssion on the GSD - happy as can be. :) And your back story gives it the context for the theme. It would have been good to see a little more to make it clearer that she was enjoying a paddling pool, but I know I often end up with the shot I can get which isn't always the one I would have preferred.

I always love your dog shots - your involvement with them is always personal and you seem to have the knack of catching their personalities in a single shot. Please don't rubbish them, or Sarah and I will have to keep nagging you. :bat: :)
