Ahh i'm kinda screwing right now.

I got in to work tonight at the club and my 40d wasn't working. I would go to take a shot and it would lock up, not display anything either on the top or back screen and turning it off and on would not reset it. Only by removing and replacing the battery would it come back to life. But then it would do it again.

Taking the lens off and setting it to manual cleaning has shown that the sutter is not moving.

Fortunately for tonight i managed to get hold of a 20d to get me through, but that won't help me for the next few nights.

Can anyone give me recommendations of where to get it fixed, and how much and how long it is likely to take?
It's just the thing i need to push me towards getting a 7d, but i don't have the funds right now. :( :bang:

ooh thats not good, for prices below is what I had to get done on mine for insurance repair (from taking to the shop to getting them back took just over a week):

I thought it sounded pretty reasonable so repair may not me as bad as you think!
I would not know where to take it in Essex though. hope you get it sorted soon.
20d
dismantle, replace function flex, shutter release, battery cover and LCD reassemble, test check and calibrate. total cost £286.26

40d
dismantle, replace base, cf cover and rear cover, reassemble, test check and calibrate. total cost £242.35

Sounds like the shutter.

Same thing happened to mine.

Cheers, i'll check those out.

I assumed it was a shutter problem as i have heard of it going a few times before.
What slightly concerns me is the lack of error message, it just locks up and goes blank.

Well i have a few quotes back.

Colchester camera repairs.
£165 for service plus parts.

Keith Leedham.
For a service and repair, estimates £100+ depending on the fault.
Sounds alright and is local. But works from home which i know shouldn't mean much, but still.

Fixation.
Free estimate, but wont give a worst case idea of costs. Bit of a trek for me to get there so would mean posting it off.

M W Camera repairs.
£65 plus parts.

Just need to decide who to go with now.

you got insurance? Home insurance?

Just had my 40d and 24-105L completely overhauled and cleaned under the insurance (£175pa) world wide. The repairs alone would have come to £700 for the 2 but they did the lot, and gave me 10% of the estimated valu of the body and lens to hire something in the mean time.

The body and the lens look almost new!!

Other than that, ask for some references from the repairers. If they are good, and legit they wont mind providing some.
