Im a happy bunny today, just received news that a photo of mine has been featured on the front cover of a property magazine. Unfortunately completely unpaid but its great exposure for me so im still pretty chuffed.

Here's the image the featured:

Nice to see it there but stinks that there is no reward for your efforts, then I suppose the property barons are a bit short!

Nice one  It's a nice, warm and fuzzy feeling to see your work in print, enjoy it.

Well done, it just like getting an equity card....... you can't get one if you haven't worked but you can't work if you haven't got an equity card.

I bet the work will flood in (no pun hahaha) now that you have some exposure (again no pun).

Just make sure you get plenty of credit back to you and make sure you New sales figure help you sell.

Sorry, you've been mugged off royally there.

edit to elaborate: Charge the thieving ****s for unauthorised usage and copyright infringement.

And exposure...exposure...exposure...it's a crock, please don't fall for that

Where does it say it was unauthorised useage?

Hopefully the OP will make another appearance to help clear up the mess.

Sounds to me like they've used it, and then informed the photographer afterwards. Maybe I'm wrong but to me that's how it reads. Hope it is the other way round!!!

Either way, being sold usage of your images for "exposure" is getting old now. The stock market is saturated, truth is nobody will get a commission from a front cover like that.

Bites tongue. Awaits onslaught.
Whats the point, people never liusten to good advice so best let them make the mistakes and be skint, they'll soon learn, oh wait a minute, by that time it'll be too late because you'll now have a good name as someone who will supply freebies, plenty of pats on the back will keep the wolves from the door.

Well that is the Micro Stock market that has caused that problem... I reckon I can buy that shot or something similar from a micro stock agency for about $3... how is the tog going to earn from that.

I do understand your frustration about the subject but until we know the facts, I am siding on the 'Now that I am in the business of selling' my rates for future work are...... and so on.

No need for all us sellers and pro's to get all defensive unfortunately the world is a virtual open market.

Full story behind this needed (i.e. did you authorise this in advance).. but if you feel happy, that's the main thing.

And...they're off!

Thanks for all the feedback guys and yes I do think some background info is needed here just to clear things up, probabaly should have given the full story when posting up the image but was on my way out :nono:

OK so the estate agent in question is one i d a fair bit of work for, I shoot their high end propertied for sales brochures and advertising etc. They asked me if I had any local landmark shots that they could use in a small section in the magazine but told me they had no funds to pay. They did say that it would be understood if I didnt want to release any images for free but seeing as im relationship building (trying to get more work from them) I decided to help them out and submit 2 images they could use for free and said I didn't care where they went so long as I got credit for them.

They used the one for the front cover which I was suprised to see. Yes I was very happy to have my photo on the front of a glossy mag that circulates well 250,000 copies but also a little sad I didnt get paid for it. However my working relationship with the EA is very good at the moment and ive seen a 50% rise in work from them over the past 3 months so its kinda worked in a way.

I agree with everything you've said, but sometimes there is a means to an end. I gave this free image to a company I work for to help them out of a tight spot, in return they have given me more work as they like what im producing for them. Gotta grease the wheels every now and then mate ;)

Wheels greased and all is good I guess :)

Sounds like a winner, a bit of marketting and cementing the relationship. 250,000 copies and you never know who might catch a glimpse. In terms of the credit, I don't know how you had it phrased but this seems like an ideal situation for trying to get something a bit more verbose than the usual one-liner, "Matt Xxxx is a very talented photographer who we are pleased to use for our property marketting. This scenic shot of <place> is one taken by him <month and year>".

When you say you work for them do you mean you do paid photography for them? assuming you do then no problem with this but just be aware that what you do once might be expected of you more frequently.

You should have explained yourself a little clearer Matt, that is like showing a Red rag to a Bull with some of them on here  Took me all of 15 seconds to check out some of your interior work, and good stuff it is. So for all concerned I think you can relax and go and hunt down some other fellow tog who is threatning the market with their freebies :D Congrats Matt

Good one, but I'm not one of them photographers that cries over competition. It frustrates me more when photographers like the OP don't get what they deserve, a circulation of 250,000, front page, full page, need I say more. Exposure/credit can do one

Yes Gary I do paid work for them, started out at around 1-2 paid jobs per week which has now grown to on average about 3 paid jobs a week. It was definitely a move to build the relationship and knew from the outset it would be a freebie, but if it resulted in them seeing some more of my work which would end up with me getting more paid jobs then I was willing to let this one fly.

The funny thing is, they have asked me for more possible front page images on a free basis and made it clear that they dont have funds to pay for them :bang:. Needless to say I havent submitted an image this month, mainly due to me not having a suitable one but also because I really think I should be paid for the contribution due to the time and effort it takes to shoot such an image.

unless its posted in talk business section then its not really anyones business if he got paid or not... guess the OP shouldnt have even mentioned it really :)
