Very interesting - what sort of tool are we talking about ?

Day 198 - Peace at Last

Today this white Dove chose to land in my back garden and hang around long enough for me to take it's portrait for both of my challenges :D

Day 199 - Called in for a Drink

I was lucky enough to get a visit from this wonderful little Greater Spotted Woodpecker Juvenile for a few minutes today looking to have a quick drink from our bird bath :woot: I'm really pleased with these even though I did make a school by error in that my ISO was set higher than it needed to be because of my photo from yesterday

very nice , but it looks to me like the head is a little soft and the focus is on the edge of the trough - could be my crappy work laptop

Thanks Pete, I think actually the eye and the trough is roughly the same focus plain  I may have slightly missed focus but I don't think I'm far off

Congrats on getting a decent pic of a probably quick small bird !!

Thanks Vince, I was lucky he must have been thirsty as he stuck around for a fair bit

just to say it was indeed my work laptop (I must clean that screen) - on my 21" calibrated tft at home it looks much sharper

Good to know :D I'd have hated to have picked a duff shot out of the 8 I've put on flickr of the bold youngsta :D

Oh, good shot of the dove too, i could guarantee i would have messed up the exposure on that one! After a day out in County Donegal on sunday past i came home and whilst sorting through the shots from the day, the wife looked over my shoulder and commented, "why can you not take up a hobby you are good at?" Says a lot for my photo skills :shake:

Not bad Matt!

Phil

Thanks Phil :D

Nice set Matt, did you need to crop at all...? It does look a little soft... Considering 3200th

It is quite a crop even at 500mm :( I suspect that hint of softness is a little bit of noise just creeping in :( I'll hope my hand up and say I buggered up a little in that I was still at ISO3200 from yesterdays photo :bang: while noise is not really and issue until the high numbers there is of course a little bit in there at 3200 as the shutter speed shows there was no need for me to use that ISO and I went on down to ISO640 afterwards :'(

With support like that who needs critique ;)

The posture/stance of the dove is fun - looks like it's going to tumble over backwards !!! and catching the woodpecker in your garden is great... would be chuffed to get one in mine

Thanks :D the Dove really did crack me up, it's actually considering taking off  I'm actually really lucky I get the great spotted woody on a regular basis almost daily we even have greens most weeks a couple of times

Day 200 - Going Green

It's always nice to be able to mark a milestone in my challenge with something a little different and today is the 200th day of 2012 and the first time that I caught a Green Woodpecker with my camera and ended up with a photo that I'm happy to use online

200/366 (565) by mwhcvt, on Flickr

This is not exactly the most impressive photo of a Green ever shot, the light wasn't great so I had to have the ISO up to get a shutter speed that I was happy with and these are rather heavy crops as the Green was not as camera friendly as his smaller cousin from yesterday

Day 201 - I've passed my best

It appears I've passed my best, MWHCVT can now be found on the out of date shelf at the supermarket :suspect:

Interesting idea but i'd have said that the photo oon the passport needs to be in better focus . Also in these days of identity theft is it really a good idea to post a picture showing your passport number etc on a public forum ?

I didn't want the focus on me ;) but on the date of expiry :D but you do raise a valid point on the numbers front :D that is why I used a shallow DoF and have also rearranged the numbers a little digitally :D

Matt

I think in that case i'd have gone for a lower angle so that only the dates were sharp and the rest of the text was more blurred - but that aside nice creative idea

That would indeed have works  I supposed I should have gone to f/2.8 rather than f/4 too I was working from a different idea but I think your right a shallower DoF would have been better :D glad you like the idea I just love that opening paragraph :D

Day 202 - Warwick Nights

The weather has not been great for a couple of weeks now so it was nice to get the opportunity to get out and use the camera it's also one of the first opportunities that I've had to use the 5D3 after the sun has set

This is an angle that I've wanted to capture for a long time I once did a similar angle but the photo's were never that good :( hopefully I've improved :suspect: in the 3+ years since I too those photo's

Nice pic! Took my sister to see Jessie J at Warrick Castle last week, the castle and surrounding areas really do look nice. ;)

Thanks Ben, it's a stunning area for photo's it would be even better with a few less cars ;) but well worth taking photos, sad to say the only time I've been in the castle since having my camera was last year and I didn't have my camera because it was my friends wedding and I knew it was going to be a very good day

Very nice photo mate - to be hyper picky (which I am  ) I might have framed slightly wider (or taken one step back) so that the light on the upper left wasnt cropped.

Thanks Pete, I see where your coming from  in the un-cropped version that street light is all there  but I cropped it a little because I didn't want the car closest to my position to dominate frame too much and become a distraction :D

Day 203 - Golden Education

This is a photo that I've waited a long time to be able to capture as I had to wait for the position of the sunset to be in the position that I wanted  here you can see Princethorpe College

To be fair we're having a lot of grey skies here too recently :( so when we get a sunset it's important that I make the most of it :D

Matt

and you've certainly acheived that - i might be tempted to crop the middle third to a panoramic as theres maybe a bit too much foreground and a bit too much sky away from the 'action'

Thanks Pete  that crop would certainly be and option

Cracking Green Woody Matt. How are you finding your new lens?
Lovely sunset, not seen one of those for ages!

You need to get out somewhere this evening mate, I'm almost certain that there is going to be a good sunset today  I'm loving the new lens  it's working really well :D

Matt

I'm about 20 pages in and this is great. Will be checking out the rest in a bit.

Thank you kindly  it's great that your enjoying what you've seen so far

Finally finished it and there are some excellent photographs on here. I'm only a week in and already wonder what I will do if the weather is bad. Nice to see you push your boundaries too. I think I will try that when I get quiet with wedding work.

Astro photography being something I want to do when time allows. This is the project that pushes us all to new limits I suppose.

have you got a macro lens - or some extension tubes ?

Table top macro has been the saviour of my 1000 thread throughout some of the worst rain on record.

Day 204 - Point to the Stars

This evening as it was clear I thought that I'd head on out to get some star photo's in, I wasn't in the mood for star trails and didn't really have the time, but I wanted to check out this location for a future star trails evening
