Day 141 - Personal Importance

Today I've hardly had a minute to myself today I've used this pair of two pound coins minted to commemorate the centenary of the death of Florence Nightingale, this is particular important to me as I spend a number of weeks in Saint Thomas' in Westminster where she was a nurse and I was in there at the time of the centenary the reason for these coins :D

Day 142 - Enjoying the View

I guess it was not just me enjoying the sunset this evening :D this was taken up at Burton Dassett :thumbs: a wonderful location to look out over Warwickshire and beyond :thumbs:

Hi Matt.

Havn't time to catch up with you for a while now, good to see you still doing some good stuff. I'm watching to see what else you come up with using your new triggers.
What filters did you use for todays potd? I tried something similar on sunday at a lighthouse we came across but always ended up with a blown out sky.

Hi Phil, I didn't actually use any genuine filters on that one, I slightly over exposed the sky, then in RAW used fill light to bring out all the detail I wanted in the bottom half of the frame, and then added a digital ND grad onto the sky to bring out the real detail and colours of the sky, you could achieve this effect with out the need for all that editing by using something like a 2-3 stop Soft ND grad :thumbs:

Day 143 - Supportive Friend

The best friend of a dedicated night time photographer has to be a nice solid tripod :thumbs: this is my tripod, as you can see it really has seen some use and is showing off some war wounds from it's time with me :thumbs: but not matter the knocks that it's received it's always been ready to take the next photo :thumbs:

Day 144 - Dassett Delight :D

I met up with fell TPer Jason this evening with the plan of doing a little bit of star trail fun but as the light began to fade a thick haze started to roll in and that ruined our plans for this evening :( but we did manage to find a nice location for a future star trail :thumbs:

Very nice again matt. I have just been checking the time that you took this as there is 2 old round towers close to me that i am trying to get. I always end up with a blown sky!

Thanks Phil, I'm rather pleased with this scene myself, now to avoid the blown sky with a shot like this you can either bring in a ND grad, or in this case I exposed for the sky with a slight positive exposure compensation to slight over expose the sky but not blow it, this gave me enough detail in the foreground/ground to bring out detail with fill light in RAW processing and then add a digital ND grad in PP :thumbs:

Day 145 - Helimed

This evening I had to visit the local hospital as my dad has been in there for a few days :( and I got treated to being front in line for a landing of one of the regions Air Ambulances I fudged my first frame not resetting my ISO from 3200 :bang: but still managed to get this with some nice prop blur :thumbs: at 1/15th

Day 146 - Trails Galore

Well today I went up to Burton Dassett to give my camera a good test out on a first effort at star trails :thumbs: and I'm really pleased with the level of detail that it's picked out and then I also managed to get some light trail in from the passing cars

Day 147 - Dog's Dinner

This evening as I trusted the weather forecast, that's a mistake that I should have learn from by now rather than sitting out doing star trails I went to a family BBQ and Ollie the Dog featured must have got a little bit of meat out of everyone there :lol:

Day 148 - Golden Times

This evening I had just enough time to get up to the windmill for golden hour :thumbs: and the rushed driving was truly worth it for the display that I was treated to :thumbs: and will hopefully have talked someone else into joining the forum :thumbs:

Some great stuff again, Matt.
The dog is really cute and the shot looks great in B&W.
I really like the star trails themselves, but perhaps the ground is a little bright? Either way, I really like that photo too.
The swans on the canal are brilliant! I like that you bribed them with sandwiches to get them in position!
 
Hi Matt. I love the canal shot. Seen on flickr but had to say I love the tone and perspective you've captured. And the mother and young add yet another dimension to the shot.

Thank Ben, Ollie the dog is great but a right little sod when having a BBQ he must have managed to get food off everyone's plates :naughty:

I see what you mean about the foreground on the star trails it was a debate as to leave it bright or darken it off :D Indeed I saw the swans the other side of the bridge but wanted the photo from this side :D bribery was the only way

Day 150 - Daisy Day

Seeing all of the zoom burst stuff that I've seen over the last few weeks I though that I'd have a go at it :D

Day 151 - Getting in the Spirit

I'm starting to get in the spirit of the Jubilee so this evening I went through my coin collection and found out a coin minted in the year of the queens coronation :thumbs:

Is that the right date, Matt?
I'm not up on all of that stuff but I thought she became queen in '52 and was officially coronated in '53.
Anyway, it doesn't matter, the photo is very good and makes me want to explore the macro world - at the moment I am totally ignorant of that type of photography.

To be fair it's more than likely that your correct, but I was just going on the fact that this year is the 60 anniversary so :thinking: but it's more than possible as you say she was not corinated till 63 you should give macro a go, for static stuff like this I use a set of cheap manual extension tubes that cost under a tenner of ebay :D

Yes, I have heard about these extension tubes so am I right in thinking that they are used with 'normal' lenses (like my 18-55mm) or do you also need a special macro lens? Having just looked, my EFS 18-55mm lens says MACRO 0.25m/0.8ft on the side. So that I presume means the nearest I can get is 25cms without losing focus?

Just a normal lens, I used to use them mainly with my 50/1.8 and they were really good, but I used them today with the 24-70/2.8 because that's what I had on the camera :thumbs:
