Hi guys,

I'm planning a trip for next year which will take me about a year  and I'm looking for suggestions on must see places in Europe.

I'm not planning on going to Scandanavia at the moment and haven't got belgium, holland or germany down yet (specualtive plans for a "northern europe" trip when I'm more able to afford it) but pretty much anywhere else is fair game.

Eastern Europe suggestions are greatly appreciated, plus any must see's in Russia.

I figure someone on these boards must have visited most places so thought I'd ask, cheers in advance

How are you travelling?

Public transport, no flights at all (unless its a really really (REALLY!!) good reason).

Basically train and bus.

The wider goal is to get from the Atlantic (Potugal) to the Paciffic (China, maybe Japan depending on money at that point) using no planes:runaway:

I toured Europe a couple of years back and of the dozen or so cities I went to, Krakow and Florence (in that order!) were the best. Krakow is an absolute *must* in my opinion :)

It used to be that you couldn't get anywhere in Europe by train without going through Hamburg, so you might as well put it on your list :)

If you go to Sigulda (Latvia) you can walk down the bobsleigh run. If you go at the right time (weekends if i remember correctly) you can go down the run either in a wheeled bobsleigh (in the summer) or a proper bobsleigh (in the winter).
I think its about £2 entry and not much more than that for the ride

Thanks for the tips so far.

Lativia is on my list so will check out Sigulda and see where it is/what its close to, cheers

Is this photography related or more of a touristy trip?

Avignon in France is worth a trip for photography or not.
As is the Millau Bridge.

Went to Bulgaria a few years back - stayed in Sofia which was beautiful (went in January - lots of ice and snow!) went exploring in and away from the centre, it was great for street photography - also went to Rila monastery which was gorgeous - itching to go back!
In Normandy Point du Hoc (amongst a whole host of other places!) is worth visiting if you're interested in the D-Day landings, it really was something else.
Very envious and have a lovely trip!

It's fairly photography related, but I'm not looking to take digital or SLR :bonk:

I'm planning (atm) on taking a film rangefinder , so the photography will be more street/people and landscape based

If you do decide to take a detour into Germany there's plenty to see, although it's a huge country. Berlin is great, the Holocaust memorial is very eerie. Baden Baden on the dege of the Black Forest is beautiful in the summer, and of course it's easy getting into the forest itself. There's also the fenicular railway that goes up the side of Mount Merkur giving stunning panoramic views of Baden-Baden and the Black Forest.

:agree:

I've been to Krakow twice and am going back for a third time this Xmas. It's a simply awesome place to visit - friendly and still fairly cheap (although nowhere near as cheap as it was a couple of years ago.) There are some fantastic old buildings to look at and there are endless photo opportunites around the city itself, south to the former Jewish Quarter and across the river to the very sad and eerie former Ghetto area. Of course, there is the castle as well.

Berlin is a great place and 100% worth a visit.

If you do add Germany then Munich and Bavaria are unmissable. Berchtesgaden, Fussen and the surrounding areas are incredible. Germany's public transport system is superb, so getting around is a piece of cake. If you go to Munich then you might as well hop over the border to Salzburg as well. :)

I can 2nd Munich, and, if you have time Chamonix in the summer is excellent, take the ride up the Aiguille-du-Midi, and onto the Heilbroner. The views are stunning, and at over 3,800 metres, it's about the highest place you can get in Europe without having to physically climb.

A number of places in Croatia and Slovinia are wonderful too.

I'd cross Georgia off your list though ;)

This is especially true of the U-Bahn in Berlin (underground) although the ticket system confused me..in my hungover state. Beer in McDonalds is not a cunning plan! I also thought of Koln, stunning cathedral there. Not far away from there is Munchengladbach which hasn't got masses to photograph, but just over the border into Holland is the Grolsch brewery....I think everyone can appreciate that :D 7 Euroes for a tour and all you can drink

If you decide to go to Russia I'll be glad spend some of my time with you.
I can show outskirts of Moscow and offer a trip to the Volga-river.
Well, Also the trip in Moscow will be no less interesting.
I want to offer it in exchange for our communication. I never talk with a native English, so I think it have to be very usefully for me and cognitively for you.
And of course, we shall drink some vodka

Welcome to Russia.
(p.s email me at any time)

You just can't help liking elektro, can you...:)

Vid of Nottingham meets Moscow.....or it never happened..

For someone who say's their English is bad it's pretty damn good I think!

How many people do you know that speak Russian? :D I know I don't!

Ya know what, the first time I spelt it, and I did notice...was....electra
I changed it to electro, and still got it wrong..

:bonk:

elektro..

Phew, a few responses there.

I do love Germany, been to Berlin 3 times and visit Koln and a couple of places already, that's why I'm leaning towards not including it on this trip, but have a whole northern Europe experience some other time. I've got to agree that beer in McDonalds is a bit wierd but last time I was there they had some of the nicest hot chocolate you can buy thats not horrendously expensive.

i'll have to investigate chamonix, liking the sounds of not having to climb to get to 3800 metres though ;)

Elektro ;), Russia is one of the main places on my list, looking to go on the Trans-Manchu railway to get to China and trying to work out what I can see on a 30 day visa :bang: with the proviso that I have to tavel a big distance as well. Frantically trying to learn some survival Russian as well at the moment  so would be up for a meet

If you can suggest anything to fill the gaps please do

Cheers guys

I'll be glad to help you with your learning. Ask me, if you have some questions. Ok?

Im currently planning the trip out on Google maps, you can see what I've got so far here
If you can suggest anything to fill the gaps please do
Unfortunately I see nothing on your link...
But I think that planing your trip (acrossing Russia by train) for 30 days is a mistake.
You'll be in the train the whole time and see nothing besides views from train's window.
I think that you have to invent a new way, that will be shorter.

Email me and ask me for anything.

Cheers

AAARGH!!

Why are visas so horrible?

Looks like I might have to split it into two legs now, one European, then a quick dash back to UK, apply for Russian, Mongolian and Chinese visa and then back on the road again :'(

boooooooooo!
