Just trying a bit of everything at the moment to see what I like best. Despite being a uni student I've not really done any nightclub stuff or anything, don't believe in selling myself out to tilllate or the like.

Anyway, I'm off to photo royksopp tonight, so thought I'd fire a few questions. I've checked the guides and tutorials about, they don't cover these.

Firstly, white balance. Am I safe setting this to roughly daylight (5600K) and be done with it?

Secondly, am I safe not shooting RAW. Lightroom isn't dealing with my RAW files properly (7D) and it's proving to be a bit of a hassle. Plus (and more importantly really), I'd imagine I'll be doing a lot of burst stuff and I'll get more out of the camera if I'm not using RAW (I only have x133 cards, non-UDMA). Is this sensible? I won't really have time to do a lot of processing, I need to get a selection off asap.

IMO, auto wb is best for shooting concerts, it generally does a pretty good job at it.

Personally I always shoot RAW, but if you're happy shooting jpeg then that's cool. What size cards are you using?

I'll leave the WB on auto, just didn't want it to present a problem if I do shoot jpg and not RAW. I can always change it over if they're looking out though, I guess.

Got 3x8gb so 600 worth of JPG and RAW so that's not an issue. Got 5 songs so no way will I hit that. Reason for jpg is mostly for burst speed really; I can get a good RAW burst but it often takes 30-60secs to clear. I always shoot RAW only elsewhere but this seems to me like a good time to change to JPG only.
 
If you wish to keep the lighting colours as per stage teh YES daylight will do this BUT if you wish to nutralise them and get colours back to normal then auto. I think daylight is best.
AS for RAW v JPG well I only shoot RAW and easy to batch PP in Bridge any how.
By the way who or what is 'royksopp'
 
I'd be worried not shooting RAW tbh, gives that bit of freedom to mess up!

As above, auto has always served me well.

Where are you seeing them? I fancied going along to see them in Leeds but don't think time will allow :(

Be good to see your results either way, I cant decide over 7D / 5DMKII when I upgrade early next year, do you have a flickr?
 
I am slightly worried about not shooting RAW, it's what I'm used to doing. But Lightroom is messing up my RAW shots at the moment, and it's a bit of a hassle to put them through something else by tomorrow morning. Plus, the burst issue does mean that if I shoot RAW, there's a chance of missing something, which is obviously worst case scenario.

And they're at Leeds University Union. :)
 
i know little, but i'd say shoot in raw, then you can change the WB yourself later in the PP stage.

or shoot in RAW but set a custom WB when you're at the event.

Spot can be tricky if the artists are jumping around a lot........"partial" is a good idea, or even centre evaluation.

I usually shoot Manual; RAW; auto WB. I try to get a shutter speed of around 125 as a minimum, and use f5.6 to give a nice bokeh. I have to wack up the ISO though....sometimes to 3200!

Can you post some of your shots after the gig either in this thread or linked? I'm desperate to know if the 7D is the way to go, for me. I shoot quite a lot of gigs and currently have a 40D. I really don't need (and can't afford) full frame and keep thinking I should make the plunge....but it's such a lot of money and with the ghosting issues reported on the 7D when shooting long bursts, I'm a bit reluctant still.

As tonight is my first time, I'll stick it on partial, see how that comes out.

And yep, I'll get some of the shots up. Not sure if they'll be up to my usual standard but sure they should be pretty decent. Hopefully I won't get any of those ghosting issues :/
 
I go manual and RAW

maybe try a bit of Av center weighted with exposure compensation of they're wearing similar colour clothes as I find spot too limiting compositionally. Usually manual is more reliable for me, watch the pulses in the lights and shoot at whatever you are set up for

aaah student union level organisation...I know it far too well :P pretty harsh of the band / band's pr not to allow anything though... a more rebelious part of me at that point would've suggested monopod + fast tele from the back... :nono:

hope you get to shoot something else cool soon - if you're not already, get involved with your student media, really great opportunities :)

Dont let it put you off! Royksopp were a pretty big (ish) band for your first attempt anyway. Were they going to let you use flash? :thinking:

I'd try some of the local bands to practice, they are usually much more relaxed and let you use flash, move around a lot more, etc.

This was my first taste of involvement with them. I'm more used to doing paid corporate stuff to be honest where things...get sorted.

Like to drop myself in at the deep end. The 5d mark II was my first SLR, first digital camera in fact.

Nope, no flash but I have a bunch of 1.4s and obviously a 7D so this isn't a huge problem.

That really sucks, I can't stand it when you get the good ole 'Sorry, name isn't on the list'. I always print out my email confirmation so I can use it at the door if there are any issues (or more recently, whip out the BlackBerry and show them :)) If you do intend to shoot more gigs, you'll get to know the guys at the door who handle the press and will most likely be allowed in to shoot anyway once they know they can trust you.
 
Well, upon speaking to the newspaper, who I was taking the photos for, seems that the Royksopp management decided to pull photo passes this evening for some unknown reason. Anybody know why they might do that? I was with another photographer from a magazine when I was trying to get in and she wasn't allowed to take in her camera either.
 
Tbh there can be millions of reasons, anything from the tour manager just can't be bothered dealing with press, a band member has been in a fight and isn't looking so pretty, there isn't a photo pit and many many more unfortunately. Luckily, it doesn't happen too often. AC/DC pulled my photo pass when I was within a mile of the venue, that was heart breaking!
