me.

for being too nice.

(this is photography related....)

A pro came our horse yard to do some piccies for a few of them (he charges £300 for a canvas and £99 for an A4).... 4 separate people said he was crap. (didnt buy anything although fully intended too) so that in mind - enter me.

i did some pics for a friend/person on my horses yard and said "dont worry just pay my costs rather than the prices"....(this was a quick 5 min photo session not planned as professional as it should be)...

after that....(today)....

I also said id do a A4 print for £5 each (min 2 order).. for someone else (im going to + postage on there

which is like BOGOF as i normally charge £12 for an A4 alone

sooo.... pointers please people... the first guy i promised prints for cost and i feel awful even asking him for money as he is a friend but i cant do favours for one and not another????

think tact. asi have to go this yard twice a day.... how do i put it politely that im too nice and ive worked out my costs will be ££ for person 2....i am showing her my piccies tonight.... so instead of the £5 for each A4 i can say ive sat down and worked out costs will be £££ help!?

frankly i will be made up if i make enough money to pay my petrol for a month as im a uni studen (i am insured and NOT anywhere near being pro hence my prices!)

:bang:

IF I understand that correctly, just charge them both £10, nobody will complain at paying £10 for two A4 shots surely.

sorry i explained that badly

1. i feel bad about chargin teh first guy £10 for the two (even though thats cheap)....when i said i would charge him cost

2. this only came about as i said to person 2... i would charge her £5 each as thats what i charged the first guy.... (when i really charged him cost)

so baiscally i think i need to admit to my c0ckup and say person 1. pay me £10 a person 2 its £5 per pic (min 2pics to cover costs and make £)....

eugh mess.

lol.

Oh dear! I take it all these people know each other quite well, and they will be aware of the different pricing?
I agree with John, because the price is so low, nobody can complain (well, someone always will -----!).
Good luck.

thanks andy!

not spoke to the guy yet but got 2 more people wanting pics (6+ each :D ) so hopefully that will come off - and i will say to him that i owed you this as i promised you ages ago (which is true)

and put this down to experience!!!

i colud have charged more but tbh im no way a pro (im not crap either).... but i just think that if i can generate a lot of intrest on the yard then fab

the £5 for an A4 is for our yard only - as im already there.. :)

I don't think you are too nice, I think you are stupid - customers were well prepared to spend XXX, fair enough that they thought Photographer #1 was crap but he was charging the going rate.

Did you influence their decision at all ?

So, why the hell didn't you also charge the going rate if your images were upto scratch, use a Pro-Lab. By suggesting A4 you also say to me you are using your home printer, in which case if you are using genuine ink and paper you will be making very little towards your costs, never mind fuel.

You say you are at Uni ? - give me strength, what are you studying, I sure as hell hope it isn't business !

Or English! ;)

Tell them processing has went up in price since you last checked and then charge them whatever you feel is fair.

Are these the same people who had the pro tog but didn't buy? If they are, they know the 'market price', they also demonstrated already that they will only buy what they like, whether it be by a professional or not, so I believe you have kind of let yourself down a little.

You could generate more interest in the yard by charging 3 or 4 times what you have as it's still so low - and, to be honest, in this kind of instance, I don't believe it's about whether you are a student, an amateur or a professional - these people want to buy from you so the demand is there. If they are merely doing so as a pat on the head for you because of your age (sorry) or because they can get something for next to free, then you will find out when you raise your prices - someone paying a fiver for a pic from you won't necessarily do anything to help the profile of the yard.

Do you have some interest in the yard from a personal sense? (as in you or your family own it?).

BTW - would love to see your pics!

I say stick with the prices you quoted.

You did the first as a favour, cost only. You and the person you agreed it with knows this and you can't really change your mind on that.

You gave the next person that asked some really low prices, again, this is favour territory. If you drop those prices to cost then people will start to take the ****.

If folk are really interested then put a 'mates rates' pricelist up and whatever you do don't ever admit to what your costs are :)

Sounds like you arent incurring a huge loss here. I'd charge the lower rate as you agreed the price and explain the reason for the low cost, however future charges will be xyz

Put it down to experience, or write it off as a promotional cost...hopefully these other 6plus pics (and potential future work from it) will deliver you the profit.

"Tell them processing has went up in price since you last checked and then charge them whatever you feel is fair."

Tell them processing has gone up in price since you last checked , then charge them whatever you feel is fair.

Sorry, but if you are going to mock!!!!!!!

Got there before I did Mick :) Give the girl a break guys - she tried to do a favour - nout wrong with that. We can't all be perfect!

Suze put it down to experience - you could have charged more but you should stick to what you said first. Tell them it is a special for them but normally you'd charge more than that - they might come back to you for more.

went - past tense of go (Verb)1. Move from one place or point to another; travel.
2. Travel a specified distance or time.

Nothing wrong with that sentence in my part of the world :nono::razz: Then again I never gone to uni. ;)Come on guys, lighten up. :D

Suze23, forgive me, I was just poking some fun.:sulk::schtum:

You're not a muppet Suze, we have all made errors like this :) Such generosity may lead to future work but do mention that these are one off prices as its close to the festive season.
If they pass your name on & you get some follow up shoots remind them that the prices are specials.
Carole

Hope my grammar is up to scratch Doog ;)

Sorry Suze, I forgot my reply post when I commented on the spelling.

Just put it down to experience, it will possibly cost you a little but you will start to become known as a 'tog by the users of your yard. Tell them that this was a favour done at cost so that you could hone your skills in preparation for offering a full photographic service in the future.

Hmm - I don't think a debate about what is or is not English of a reasonable standard is a good idea .

Most areas do have regional variations that have become , through passage of time , part of normal language .

Come on guys. This started as a little joke from me and in the end backfired somewhat. Let's not let arguments detract from the OPs thread any further.

£99 for a A4 print?

Crumbs, Ive been asked to do some nice horse pictures for a lady who has a couple on the same yard as my Mrs, had no idea what to charge but it wouldnt be that much.

Suze I wouldnt mind seeing your horse pics when you are done, hopefully I can get some ideas.

Ok, I'll end it here. I don't want to cause friction by questioning your claim that there's nothing wrong with "Tell them processing has went up...".

I see what you did there Dougie

Sorry folks. Move along...

sorry ive been so long replying to this!!!

now now you lot..... i cant leave you alone for 2 minutes can i?!!!

Probably too late to add anything useful here but if I were in your shoes, rather than doing someone a print at cost then I'd just provide them with the digital file for free so they can arrange their own printing at whatever size and quality they want.

If you are just a student doing it for the fun of it then you have no professional reputation to protect and you're not losing income by doing it. It just seems easier all round.

On the other hand, if you are to charge for prints then charge what YOU think it is worth or what YOU would be happy to charge the client.

not too late rob :)

i told the person i did photos for that i would provide her with all the prints on a disk (with my compyright on them) for free and any she wants with copyright removed will be £6-8 each (not decided yet)!....

then she can print them at asda etc in her own time :)

does that sound resonable??

any money i can make goes towards my horse anyhow so more the merrier :)

thanks :)

i was very proud of that one - luckily the owner agreed and we ordered it in A2 and it looked fantastic :)

I've got a slightly different take on a similar theme, albeit with quite a bit of PS assistance. There are definitely errors which wouldn't allow a large print though! :D

love it ^

nice horse :)

i didnt use photoshop at all with the huge print out i did which i was proud of!...im just hoping that my work pays off and the whole yard want pics doing in spring and summer :) just a bummer that im not that talented to do pics of myself and my horse haha :)

The PS work was to remove the lead reign and fill in about a third of the left of the image with sky. If you look closely you can still see the editing - hence it needing some more work before going to print.

A mounted self portrait could be quite an amusing set up! :D

i think yo have done a good job!!!

i tried self portrait, trouble is... horse isnt as quick off her feet like i am  !!!

i should post one.... it wasa funny attempt :D
