After attending a one day course on long exposures and image layering, I thought I'd post this and get some feedback. It is five images taken in Clumber Park, Nottinghamshire. These were then blended together (or layered). Please let me know what you think.

Considering you were aiming to use the five images to extend the dynamic range i don't think it has worked, the dark areas are still very dark and the sky is still without detail.

What were the settings for each image?
 
As Rob has already said, there is something wrong with the image, its either bright or dark, there are no mid tones.
When I tried it did not look right either, I think it requires a lot of practice to get it looking real.

Hi, thanks for your comments. The initial shot was taken at f29, 0.8 sec on iso 100. I then took 4 more exposures, 1 @ one stop underexposed and another @ two stops underexposed then another two, one stop and two stops overexposed. I then just layered them together with tone mapping.
I think the sky is without detail because it was a clear blue sky, no clouds in sight.
Where did I go wrong then? I guess I will have to practice a lot more!

Just another point, these shots were taken about 3.30pm last Saturday, 30th Nov '13.
 
My take on multiple exposures is to aim so every single part of the picture is full of detail. Take a look at one of my attempts, more HDR, but its the same idea.

No dark areas and no blown areas.

I had three shots here, one to expose the sky and bright snow properly, one to expose the mids and another to bring the detail out in the dark areas. This might mean i needed -4ev for the sky and only +1ev for the dark areas.
Its trial and error, having an EVF or using live view can help so you can instantly see how it will turn out.

Im still learning as well but i hope some of that made sense.

Thanks for that Rob, I'll keep at it and we'll see what I can get. More attempts to follow but not sure when as I'm getting busier at work.

How are you guys taking multiple exposures for different parts of the scene.

Are you exposing and repositioning or "guess work" and just changing exposure

You keep the camera in exactly the same spot and then take several photos ranging from under exposed (to get the detail in the highlights) through to over exposed (to get the shadows)... You then blend these in post processing to get the details in the relevant areas.

So its only really for tripod shots then..

Unless you have a really steady hand then yes. You can get photoshop to try and align hand held photos, but it doesn't always work and IF it does you tend to have to crop quite tight due to the overlap...
 
To me it looks soft Phil and pretty much the same as a single image would look.
i think what you need to do is exposure for different areas of the shot, not just dial in stops.
Say first expose for the sky, then the centre of the image, then the foreground, then blend.
Another thing that'll do you no favours is the f stop.....f29 is getting seriously high and into the range of distortion

Edit...just noticed this was back in december, i'm a bit slow ;)

I had wondered whether it was like a focus,recompose situation.
