Multimedia Player advice please

Being a complete ignoramus when it comes to these things can someone please point me in the right direction with regards to multimedia players. I quite fancy a player that would run something like the birdguides app ‘Birds of Britain and Ireland iPhone’. What choice is there for running these app's has it got to be a iphone, ipad, or itouch (what’s the difference?) or are there any clone players around that would do the same job? Have they all got built-in speakers?

All iPhone apps will only work on the Apple devices. With some more popular apps they may be available on other devices, the most likely being Android devices.

Thank you, as I do not need a phone it looks like a ipod touch I guess.
