Multiculturalism at its best

Tired of ultra right wing politics that is continuing to be decemiated through the forum I just like to say how wonderful it was to have a brief trip down to our wonderful nations capital earlier this week I had to visit London, which for me usually means driving in down Edgware Road, and the traffic usually allows enough time to get a look around and it really was wonderful to be able to see the many nations and cultures merged into one giant mixing bowl of life, I passed various international supermarkets selling all sorts of weird and wonderful foods, and all sorts of amazing sounding restaurants from your Caribbean to Thai and even and Eritrean restaurant, and this is just on one road, I'm willing to bet you could dine in a resturant specialising in a different nations food once a week for an entire year in London....

So I say what makes this country great and makes be proud to be English is that we are as a nation always looking to help those worse off than us, to welcome all nations in to the country...and long may that continue
 
LOVE the Edgeware Road!!
 
To me, being able to enjoy different cultures, their cusine and the way its all mixed up making London one fantastic, vibrant city is the best bit about living here

I have to say it must be fantastic to have access to it all the time...I love visiting and driving in London though I wouldn't be wanting to do it all the time :lol:
 
I used to go in the Standard Sweet Shop on the Foleshill Rd. most days.

Assorted Indian snacks on a plate and a pint of lassi. Wonderful.

Ah yes the standard sweet centre my dad's company used to have its offices just a couple of streets from there, so used to call in quite often, some amazing colours/smells on display there....used to love it working round foleshill being quite an Indian area there was nearly always that waft of cooking in the air, I love the smell...

A while ago, I used to work in Bradford, doing strange upgrade things to computers overnight... for the entire 3 month contract my regular Friday Treat breakfast was taken at the Sweet Centre Cafe down on Lumb Lane, if I shut my eyes I can almost taste the Chola and Puri.

Sounds similar to the place in Coventry mentioned above, I have a treat day coming up I might call in to it to get a couple of little bits :)

My daughter who is studying archaeology at UCL lives near the Edgeware road and she loves that area. When we go and visit I could walk around for hours at a time such an amazing area of the capital.

Indeed it is all the touristy areas have their interest but so does Edgware and other areas have just as much interest For different reasons, never actually stopped there as usually in a massive rush to make an appointment or just then wanting to get home post appointment but I intend to make tge effort to explore a bit one time Im there
 
Just like a lot of brits these days I dont need to go to london to experience sights like that, I just need to step out my front door open my eyes to see the multiculturalism, my nose to smell the multiculturalism and my ears to listen to the multiculturalism.
sorry I dont understand what is great about any of it.
 
Every time I step into TK Maxx, and close my eyes I could be in any one of the Baltic states:cool:

I'm not going to go into the benefits or otherwise of multiculturalism but I just have to say that I feel sorry for you, for not being able to see the way other nations enhance our own cultural life.

Why would that be racist (a lot of what you spout could well be considered rasist, facishist or just vile) however as nice as it is to embrace all that multiculturalism brings to the UK it's also equally important to embrace our own culture and history

Really I echo the sentiment below, as I said above nothing wrong with embracing out own culture and history however it's seems sad to me to not want to embrace the culture of other nations

I loved working in Southall when I lived in West London. The people, the food, the colours. Love it.

I dont think I said that I didnt want to embrace other cultures. I simply said "I dont understand what is great about any of it"

Very good :thumbs: though I'll struggle get the idea of someone somewhere getting increasingly angry as his crayons snap well furiously colouring in, my god imagine the anger that would erupt if he were to breach the borders of the colouring book

Interesting. Do you see anything great about your own culture?
 
The different ethnic cuisines is good but we have had our food being spiced up when Asians from the Indian subcontinent and Ugandan Asians that came over in the 50s-70s. It's not really relevant to the multiculturalism experiment Labour foisted on us. I don't agree with David Cameron on a lot of things, but he was right here in 2011:

Under the doctrine of state multiculturalism, we have encouraged different cultures to live separate lives, apart from each other and the mainstream. We have failed to provide a vision of society to which they feel they want to belong. We have even tolerated these segregated communities behaving in ways that run counter to our values.

Quite like budhism, most seem to have Christian values but put them into real practice. Food, obviously as I love cooking and eating, the the food choices are brilliant and exciting. Southern baptist, nothing like a sing along in one of those churches. Real feel good stuff. Transport, Germanic transport is efficient, on time, clean. Asian people are so friendly. Art, lots of exciting things on other cultures.

Other cultures, so much to learn from them and to share with them.

I'm pretty sure you know exactly what you were intending with the post, and it was nothing to do with your enjoyment of the marvellous roast beef.

I doubt anyone is under any illusion of that...

The beef was good. Nice thick gravy :)
