Hello, i'm using a 30d at the moment and I do a little bit of sport photography. But with some sports happening at night I need a flash that can handle multi-flash for when i'm shooting up to 5fps. (6.5 if i get the 40d :P)

Does anyone know of a flash that can handle that? Most flashes i've seen seem to take between 2 & 4 seconds to recharge after a shot.

I couldn't see a thread with this question in, so if there is one, i apologise.

Thanks, Chris

How do the sportsman feel about flash at night? I've always shied away from using them.

It depends completely on what power you're shooting at. If you're blasting at full power then nothing is going to keep up at that speed. Best bet would be a 580EX II with a CP-E4.

Thanks for the replies. I've got a cobra d400 which is pretty old and slow. I've gone through uprgrading most of my parts but I haven't been using a flash much until now. I haven't been able to find a manual for the camera but it doesn't have much in the way of settings.

The metz cl-4 looks like a strong option, and definately more within my price range, unless maybe i can find a 580ex second hand for a reasonable price. I can't really afford to spend any more than £200.

The sports are more of an extreme variety and people tend not to mind. They just like having photos of themselves in action. I dont use much in the way of power as i'm only shooting at distances from about 5-20 feet.

if you could stretch to around £240, then you could get a 580EX mk2 from Kerso or Wbessada then claim the £40 cashback from canon ;), therefore it'll cost you £200.

best this can do is 1.7 sec due to the low voltage (6V)
- I have tried this route with the 550ex – it is faster(with the cp-e3/4), and at lower power you may get 2-3 fps but the metz and quantum allows 300+ volts (just don’t use in the rain!!) – the canon system allows 6volts – so the battery pack needs to recharge the capacitor – the quantum battery bypasses the capacitor and feeds the flash directly at the high voltage it needs.

Best I have got is about 20 frames at 8fps – if you use the 580/550 with cpe3/4 you may get 2to5 and after that reduced power and missed shots

The other way to do it is to uses several flashes at reduced power – so they recycle quickly most flashes will recycle quick if you use 1/8th to 1/16th power
