Muddled import into Lightroom 3

When I import a set of images from a card into LR3, the order in which they show up in the import panel is muddled up (ie not in numerical order).

Is there a way I can keep them in the order that they were taken? Or quickly re-order them correctly?

In Library View;

View -> Sort ->

Then either Capture Time which I use of File Number in your case.
I use Capture Time as I switch between 2 cameras at a wedding and the file numbers are completely different from each and when you go round the counter they'll start getting confused and overlap.

If you use capture time it'll order in the time they were taken no matter of the file number

as its only the import preview, I've noticed but not worried about this. I tend to oreder by capture tiome when they are ina catalogue

Yes, that's where it happens. If you then want to import images taken chronologically into more than one folder, its a pain to have to sort through them and tick the ones you actually want each time.

In the import preview pane, the sort order option is greyed out and unavailable on my screen, unfortunately.

I'll have to import them and then sort them......

Are you sure it'd not active? The sort option is in grey, but the selection should be active . By default it is OFF. But if you click on the up/down arrows you should get the option to use file number

What I can see is the bottom "bar" of ther library pane, which is greyed out or inactive. I therefore can't sort before importing.

I can't understand why the files would come off the card in the wrong order anyway!

Just go into grid view in the library after the pictures are imported. There is a little arrow at the far right at the bottom - click that and make sure 'sorting' is ticked. Then in the bottom grey bar you have a sort option - lots of choices including - capture time.
