I have been invited to a night of Muay Thai fighting at a local gym.I was wondering if anybody has any experience shooting this type of fighting. What would the best range of lens to use.I suppose it will have a no flash rule.

Fast Glass but watch the DOF..Wide open and you may loose the focus on the other fighter. Lighting levels will be the most important factor... Just pray for good lighting or your kit will need to have great noise handling abillity at higher ISO's.

Snappz does quite a bit of this type of stuff...I'm sure he will be around shortly to give you more advice.

I will be using my 1DmkIII, but he only fast glass i have is my 85 1.8, and i think that will be a bit big.Hope to get my hands on a 24-70 f2.8 before the night

i used to train in muay thai ... try n stay low to the floor of the ring n shoot up ..... looks awesome when the head kicks n the clinches come in

Your 85mm will be a bit long I fear.. Of coure not knowing the venue or how far/close you can be wont help.. But the best shots are from a low posiiton and using an 85 on a crop you will be too far away for a low position..

Depending on the venue really. I use 24-70 f2.8 and sometimes a bit tight if shooting adults in a small ring. If lighting is ok shoot low down but watch out for the ropes. If lighting is crap ask to use flash but again watch out for the ropes. The referee will get in the way so quick tip is if the fights are being filmed position yourself on the same side as the video man as the ref may (and only may) try to keep out of his way.

Another tip is I always set focus point to the right of centre and focus on the fighter to the right, this enables me to keep the fighters more centred as I dont have time for cropping before the see the images.

I can borrow a 35mm 1.4 from a friend, but have never used one before and don't know about its focus speed.

Just be careful of the DOF, focs on one fighter could/will leave the other OOF. Also primes are not the best with this type of sport as one minute they could be on one side of the ring and the next right on top of you usually causing you to jump out of the way.
