mrdaviesuk's 365 - Started on 5th August 2011

I like the shot, moody and old school.

Is there a bit of a reflection of the 'E', or is it my monitor

Yes, I think there is a bit of a hotspot on the E and at the top of the L. I'm going to try and re-process that shot to see if I can fix it.

Any comment on the other (linked) shot?

It's a cheeky little shot isn't it. I think they're quite different so I would find it hard to say which I prefer.

Maybe there needs to be just a touch more on show in the linked one, but still a great shot.

So my plan to post updates daily hasn't worked too well over the last week - so here is a bit of a catchup!

Firstly the updated version of Sacrilege:

Sacrilege? (Re-done) by Mr-Davies, on Flickr

Next is Day #27 - shot on location on the "beach" :D

StoneStack by Mr-Davies, on Flickr

I came up with this as an alternate shot, as I was up late revising for an exam, think I prefer the stones slightly more for inclusion on the 365:

Tick follows tock, follows tick, follows tock. by Mr-Davies, on Flickr

Now I need some help for #28 ... 3 images (2 serious, 1 fun) - but which one, if any should be the image of the day for the 365??

Onto yesterday's - Day #29.

I had the day off from work as I was doing an exam - so after I finished, I was on the lookout for something nice to snap.

I'd seen something on a hillside from the road several times and a quick look at Google maps, I worked out how to access it.

This is actually not what I saw, but is an Ordinance Survey trig point used during the mapping of GB - including the calculation of the size of the country and distances between places (accurate to 10m).

Faces Everywhere by Mr-Davies, on Flickr

An alternative image and one of the actual structure I saw from the road are on this thread in Landscapes and Scenery

I still need to process tonight's shots, but I think I have something good - and I've got the rope burn to prove it!

Hi Paul, much better on the reshoot of sacrilege. The stones shot is great, a very good use of dof and I like its composition. The clocks and watch is a very good idea. But I also prefer the stones. Now for day 28, I like all 3 of them and is a tough one to choose! I really like the wet crown, very well captured indeed. Then I love what you did on the last one. Great light painting. Flip a coin I think between b and c!

Still can't quite decide which to go for - but possibly "Wet Crown", although I might have a go at reprocessing it with a blue hue and see how it looks.

Day #29 reminded me of the work in the "Faces Everywhere" style pictures :D

The water melon photo is wonderful  really well done on the composition and the light painting it has all come together perfectly

I like the water drops, I have done them a couple of times myself with my 365 and they are great fun but will rack your shutter up nice and quick  but you have done a good job with them, out of interest how many photo's did you take :D

I must have posted and forgot about 29 somehow, I love that shot, the low angle is great, never looked at one of these close up before, next time I see one I shall do so!

Ah sorry, thought you meant #29 when you said "the last one" in your previous post  - so thanks again!

It was my first tbh, I knew what it was (although I've no idea why or how I came to know) - but hadn't realised about the "detail" bits that appear on them (the flush plate and Theodolite mounting on top).

Hi Matt - cheers, it was a bit of fun and now one of my wallpapers on my work PC. I work in a techie rich environment, so they all appreciate it! :D

Water droplets, I probably shot about 30-40 pictures, of which maybe 10 were complete misses - the rest just weren't very interesting. It was a quick and dirty setup with what I had to hand, but I've just been paid and am eager to finally buy some OCF stuff!

Right - time to post another picture then ... it's Saturday's and another venture into yet more virgin territory.

After having a practice with creating orbs at home, I decided to do some outside in a proper location and to have a go with them and wire wool.

Unforutunately I managed to delete the orb images by accident - but I was going to use this one for the 365 anyway!

Day #30 - Firestarter ... Swirly Firestarter

Firestarter ... Swirly Firestarter by Mr-Davies, on Flickr

Afternoon.

Sacrilege looks great, looks like you've perfected it.

Stones - Nice shot, would work well for a beachy magazine / site, but otherwise it doesn;t do much for me.

Time - interesting shot, did the lack of revision pay off?

From the two water drops, I prefer B as it's a little different, both excellent though.

Melon shot is Fantastic, great creativity, love it.

29 is an interesting shot, interesting subject and well composed.

30 - How have you done that with wire wool?

Thanks Joe,

Much happier with Scarilege now - worth going back to it I think.

I think I just liked the texture of the stones and I was a bit limited in terms of how I could shoot it as it was in a 2 foot square sandpit in the garden. I felt it was a bit weak, hence why I shot a second image for the day - although I wasn't convinced that was much better.

Thankfully the lack of revision didn't hurt me too much - still passed my exam (a Microsoft technical exam - joy of joys). Plus, I got to shoot #29 on my way home from the exam - so all in all a good day!

The melon shot "Om Nom Nom" I do really like - I just wasn't sure if it felt "in keeping" with the rest of the 365 images - but I might swap it in and re-do the water droplet shots when I have some more time (really want to get a collision).

As for #30 - it's a little "involved" - but basically you create a holder, fill it, set it on fire then swing it around and watch the sparks fly :D

Time for a catch up for the last few days:

Day #31

Birmingham Small Arms by Mr-Davies, on Flickr

Not 100% on this one - feels too much like a snap rather than a picture. Going to revisit all my images from the day and see what else I can come up with.

Day #32

Floaty Light by Mr-Davies, on Flickr

Like the contrast of soft and fluffy with the sharp and regimental parts of the feather.

Day #33

Is This Meow Best Side by Mr-Davies, on Flickr

Like the light fall off/shadowed side to his face, plus the flash of red from the collar.

31 - Nice DOF, interesting subject, but maybe a little off put by the reflection/brightness on the logo.

Number 32 is great, really like it, so sharp and contrasting, You're great at these black bagrounds, how did you manage this one?

33 - I agree with what you're saying, like it

Thanks Joe,

How about this as an alternative to #31:

ShowPony by Mr-Davies, on Flickr

#32 - Shot against a black reflector, with the feather suspended by thread - with a small torch suspended from the same point to create the light and shadow sections.

There are a couple of alternative shots of the cat in my thread in the nature subforum - Is this Meow Best Side?

#31, not to keen on this pic for some reason, not sure why though. The horse is a stunning photograph, love the black and white, and the lighting is excellent.

#32, Love this one, great lighting

#33, Great pose of the cat, like it.

Thanks Michael - that was my reaction to #31. Much happier with the horse image!

I prefer the second for #31. perfect lighting and composition :D

Cheers Joe - feel like a bit of a cheat after that comment. It was shot outside at an event and is quite a heavy crop to get a "pure" subject without all the background distraction.

Just realised that I got my numbering slightly out of order.

"Is this Meow Best Side" should have been #34 and this should have been #33 - trying to capture bokeh:

Hand in the Bokeh Jar! by Mr-Davies, on Flickr

It must be so hard to think of images to take every day? I would love to try this

Thank you all for posting - it's certainly keeping me motivated.

It is hard work trying to keep the images different, and I'm sure I will revisit some subjects multiple times over the course of the 365, I'm trying to keep it intersting for both myself and you guys.

So yesterdays image (given it's now 1:00am) is the culmination of a fair bit of practice and planning:

Day #36:

NoctOrb by Mr-Davies, on Flickr

Shot without a remote release, any only a very basic torch based orb rig.

I'm going to stick a couple of alternative images from the same location in a separate thread (or you can see them on flickr now) - but I will add a link to it here in case anyone is interested.

MrD, I don't Like #35, but I don't know why :dunno: Maybe I just can't decide what to look at.

Is the church shot your number 36? It's a nice clever shot, what time was it taken?

I have also started to plat with long exposures.

Keep it up Paul.

Hi ya Paul

just found your thread...must say, some great shots in here

Can't really offer any crit but

30...Firestarter...excellent
The Feather shot is excellent, appears to be floating & love the mono

Any shot if a bike is goodd for me..the BSA is a true classic...love the angle just wish the can was'nt clipped

Re: #35 - I can see what you mean. I intended it to be busy - but I tried to create a focal point at the centre with the single reasonably well defined leaf and a vignette.

It was probably one of my weaker days all in all, as an alternative shot which looked ok on the camera - didn't translate well once processed.

The church is #36 (I've edited my post to reflect that). It was shot around 10:30-11:00 and is just a single exposure - albeit with a bit of PP to even out the lighting and WB.

I've commented on your light trails, looking forward to seeing what you come up with next!

It is hard work trying to keep the images different...

I did a 365 and stopped at 100. Mine was specific to one item, but I decided to take a break.

I'd like to say it will get easier but it won't, I'm afraid. I guess it shouldn't be easy, after all. At around 90 you'll really feel the 'pain' but just fight through it and you'll get the project done.

One thing I did was buy a notebook and keep jotting down any ideas you have so you can go back to them. I have around 60 ideas in my notebook for my 365 project so didn't run out of inspiration.....

Cheers and good luck. I'll try and keep popping back and comment to keep you inspired :thumbs::wave:

Cheers Posiview!

Sage advice about the notebook, I will have to pick one up.

Well done on getting to 100. Obviously anyone who embarks on a 365 aims to complete it - but it's clearly a big challenge and success is far from easy.

I appreciate all comments - this for me is very much a learning experience so crit is very welcome as are messages of support :)

Blondie - sorry I must have missed your post yesterday!

Thanks for taking the time to comment, glad to hear that people are enjoyed the images as much as I am :D

So quick update from the last two days:

Day #37 - shot in the outlaw's garden!

This Tle by Mr-Davies, on Flickr

Day #38 - shot in the comfort of my dining room :)

More Wine Sir? by Mr-Davies, on Flickr

The colour on this I'm not quite sure about - what does everyone think?

Also - I've posted up a couple of other images from Friday night at the church over on this thread!

Bueller.....? Bueller.....? Bueller.....? :D

Cheeky bump and a note to say I'm going to re-process #38 - as it looks more like Cola than red wine on my work monitor (by comparisson to my laptop).

Hi Paul, like the wine glass shot, but as you say the colours are very coke like. But great action in there. Nicely caught. Nice flower too, shame there is a little bit over exposed.

Cheers Micheal, I thought I'd checked for clipped highlights on that shot - I will check LR when I go back to the wine glass!

Right - to start off, here are the re-processed versions of the last two days:

#37 - Take 2

This Tle (Re-Done) by Mr-Davies, on Flickr

Happy with the tweak to remove the clipping - it's improved the colour too!

#38 - Take 2

More Wine Sir? (Re-Done) by Mr-Davies, on Flickr

Still not sure about this one - maybe still a bit too dark, whatdya think?

Onto today - Day #39 ... the arrival of my extension tubes!

Cleafup by Mr-Davies, on Flickr

Annoyingly I got some wierd flare/ghosting with my 5Dii, so had to resort to using my 30D - which was alot more challenging to focus accurately!
