Mr Rockwell

e mail mr rockwell...!

I don't know. Why don't you ask him? (I would be interested in the answer too).

Steve.

I find Mr Rockwell confusing at times;)

It looks pretty similar, if not the same, as my 85mm 1.4.

All the pro lenses from around that time look like that and have the crinkle finish, even zooms (like the 80-200mm AF-D and particularly the 20-35mm and its ilk).

Care to explain the clever joke seeing as you get it then...;)

He could tell you, but then he'd have to shoot you, and, he has a big gun as well;)

I was hoping some geek on here would know...!

The guy is an idiot.
Anyone who suggests you use vivid plus 3 notches on the D700 is a fool.

His comment about the Leica M9 tickled me - something to the effect of Leica owners don't worry about photographing in harsh conditions, they get a specialist to do it for them!

So if you're a Leica owner, you don't actually need to take pictures yourself, you get one of your servants to take them for you

:(

A.

Reveal the secret then...

Dave

Not sure whether the OP doesn't realise that it's got black tape over "Nikon AF NIKKOR" and "28mm 1.1.4 D", plus the funky home-made DOF scale.

Perhaps the black tape is to make it less recognisable, so less chance of being nicked or drooled over.

The OP does know that much:D

You guys take things too seriously - it just looks to me like he's taking the p...

Don't say that. As a newbie I've been reading his lens reviews and taking his word for it.

Take your brain, take a scouring pad, and try desperately to scrub out everything he's told you before it's too late.

I've never met the guy but from what I've read of his site, he seems well-balanced enough, both technically-speaking and mentally...
Sometimes I see something that makes me think: WTF...? Then recall that he freely admits to bending the facts and even outright lying on occasion, just for the amusement that the ensuing furore causes...

Just because one man offers an opinion, doesn't mean it's the Lord's gospel, written in stone...you are all still free to make up your own minds...

He's not an idiot and is often worth listening to. He's also goes a bit off the wall from time to time. Quirky, if you prefer.

I dislike mr rockwell :D

I like Mr Rockwell. He speaks a lot of truth which people don't like. Especially people who have spent a fortune on new equipment and want to justify it.

He also likes to have a bit of a laugh.

Steve.

I think Ken is very entertaining and I check his site every day.

He's right about most things, although I love it when I find a contradiction in his writing; usually something new he writes that he forgets contradicts something has said a year or two ago.

He's not afraid to say the unthinkable, like the D40 is enough camera for most people, and the kit lens is as sharp as lenses costing much more. Or, your skills matter more than your camera does. This is a truism. So don't scrub this out of your brain otherwise you'll have all the gear and no idea.

Other Rockwellisms I agree with (a Best Of...)

Carry less
Digital killed the tripod
The Leica man

I think he gets bad press because he's an opinionated American, not the most naturally sympathetic of categories. Check out the video of him in the B&H store, New York, he talks 19 to the dozen! Gives you an insight into the great man ;)

I think that's a little harsh. And he doesn't suggest you use vivid +3, merely that he uses it because he likes crazy colours. This is what he actually says:

Not that you want colors this wild, but I do. Art is the expression of imagination, and I dream in very vivid colors.

You probably prefer more a polite color rendition.

For people, I turn it down and get creamy smooth skin.

This will show you how to set your camera as you like.

His guides are rather helpful, but they are just that - guides. The rest is up to you.

Well whether your a Rockwell fan or a Rockwell hater one thing for sure, he always gets togs talking and questioning what he writes, and that is no bad thing imho.

He probably has more knowledge about Nikon gear than some of the the know-it-alls on here but his advice does, at times, need to be take with a pinch of salt. As said in previous threads about him, his site is run by him so he can say what he wants - if you don't like it then don't log on. Personally I think he's sound as a pound for a yank.... at least he has a SOH.

Don't say that. As a newbie I've been reading his lens reviews and taking his word for it.

That's the (or one of) the problem(s) with him, newbies are sometimes pointed at his site and take too much as gospel. Yes, some stuff is worth reading but some is plain wrong. If you know enough to sort the BS from the useful stuff, you don't need his advice. Treat his place like you would Top Gear - it's entertaining and occasionally informative but if you want the truth, whole truth etc, look elsewhere.

Ken Rockwell is OTT, opinionated and often wrong, but he's right a lot of the time too, and entertaining to read. I sent him a PM years ago, when I was just getting into digital and finding a couple of things difficult to grasp, and got a very courteous, complete and personal reply within a couple of days. It would be quite difficult to dislike the guy after that.

kens great i like him
its lile a crossword you have to understand the thinking as he himself points out.dont blame him if you didnt read it...

While often inspired by actual products and events, just like any other good news organization, I like to make things up and stretch the truth if they make an article more fun. In the case of new products, rumors and just plain silly stuff, it's all pretend. If you lack a good BS detector, please treat this entire site as a work of fiction
