I bought an incredibly cheap Variable ND off ebay - £6, to be precise. It seems to go to about 6 stops comfortably, although it claims to be good to about 9. If you push it to the max, though, there's a fair bit of leakage at diagonal corners as here:

You can also see the same effect here, but this time I was expecting it and did it on purpose;

The waves shot was done on a 6'' exposure, tripod and cable release in bright sunshine. I did one on 8'', but it was horribly overexposed.
