mpbphotographic Query

I bought a lens from MPB last month with no problems at all. Ordered an identical one for my missus at the weekend and one for a Nikon arrived instead of a Canon one. (I had a niggling feeling something was amiss when the confirmation of despatch email addressed me as someone else. More careful reading showed it also showed a different order number to the one that confirmed my order.)

Contacted them by email, and gave them both order numbers. They were quick to arrange a courier to collect the Nikon lens the next day and assured me they'd be in touch as soon as the recipient of my lens contacted them. Have had to contact them again as I heard nothing the following day and they tell me that the other buyer was an International one and the item is still in transit so has not been delivered yet. They don't have another lens in stock so I have to wait till the other buyer receives the wrong lens, contacts them and they arrange a return then send it to me. So much for next day delivery lol.

I do believe they are reputable though. Mistakes happen sometimes and as long as I am kept informed and they sort it out as quickly as possible then I think that's all you can ask of a company. They did also refund my postage costs as an act of goodwill too. I wouldn't be put off using them again.

Wow, thanks for making your first reply to my thread. Sounds like you are a very patient guy!

I have just read an email from the company mpb, asking me to put the kit and lens in a sturdy box. Does that mean the box I bought the camera with, as it is still in mint condition, or do they want that in another box?

The email is not so clear and they won't reply back to me until tomorrow now! Any ideas?

I would say another box. They'll want the camera box in good condition to sell surely.

Would have been helpful to have spoken to a sales advisor, but they insist on all of the contact over email. Wish I kept that original box that I received it in lol!

They are talking about a strong well packed box for posting the camera in so that it doesn't get damaged.
If you don't have the original box just make sure you wrap the camera in plenty of bubblewrap and put it into a strong cardboard box, filling the spaces with more bubblewrap or other filling material.

What happens when you phone the number on their website, is it just an answer phone?

I have the original box, but not another cardboard box. Apart from the Walkers box we have at home lol. Loads of bubble wrap though.

Put the original box in the Walkers box, and fill the rest of the Walkers box with bubble wrap / old newspaper. MPB are paying the transport cost, so the weight / size of the parcel is of no concern to you. What matters is that the kit arrives in the best possible condition.

I found another smaller box that I used. I filled the rest of the box with bubble wrap so the Canon box wasn't able to move.

Courier from Parcel Force just arrived, gave me a receipt with a tracking number to follow it on the website.

I did a large order with them last week and everything turned up in better condition than I was expecting. Selling a lens to them this week also which I no longer need so I'll give some feedback on how that goes.

Which lens are you selling?

Nikon AF 300 F4 (old 1987-2000 model) as I want more reach and that doesn't accept TC's. I'll see how things go!

BIIIIIIG issue. They've emailed me saying they quoted me for the wrong product (newer AF-S version) and asked for photos. I've sent them to them yesterday and not heard anything else back. The lens is due to be picked up tomorrow by their courier, so what the hell do I do now then? :S

Great company to buy from, but thats one royal **** up if I ever saw one.

That's surprising, considering the AF-S sells for around twice the price of the AF - did the presumably high quote not ring alarm bells with you?

I'm not 100% on what either lens is worth so I didn't know what to expect quote wise. Even so, it was clearly stated as being the AF version and I even put the manufacturing date in the description. None of thats my fault, its just the person who was dealing with it obviously didn't read it properly. Looks like I'll have to turn the courier away tomorrow as theres no chance I'm sending a lens off with no quote on it.

That is not good really and that mistake obviously has messed you about.

Email received yesterday, stating my item had been received and payment to be made within 3 days. Sad to have given up my Canon 600D, but moving fwd with my Nikon D7k!

As a VERY rough guide, you can expect around 1/2 to 2/3 of the new price on current kit as a trade in (top condition, boxed etc.) and about 2/3 the dealer's selling price on other kit (again, top condition, boxed etc.).

When possible, e-mail photos of the items, clearly showing model numbers etc - avoids confusion.

Cool, thanks.

Just had an email now saying that I had not left them my account details, which I had clearly left in the box, that was covered in bubble wrap and tape. Anyone else have this issue with the company?

Hi,
Just to clarify, on all purchases we require the details to be entered securely into our system as per the link you have been sent in the email (this is also in the collection confirmation email).

This ensures that we definitely have the correct details for payment, and there are no potential errors from typos on the form, hand writing or similar.

If you can follow the link today your payment will be issued to clear today.

Thanks,

MPB

Cool, thanks.

Like I said, that's a very rough guide, based on what I've received in Px in the past. All my kit is very well looked after and the prices I got almost certainly reflect this. I've also been happy to leave the lenses with the buyers to allow them to test them thoroughly - I'm a buyer of 2nd hand kit as well as a PXer so I'm glad the stuff they (DCC and Mifsuds) are quite picky! I'm sure MPB are the same - I may find out one of these days!

I sent a request for a sigma lens and was very surprised they offer the same for cash as for a trade in on another product. That seemed a bit odd. You usually get more if you trade for another product.

I had a similar quote as well for an exchange I wanted to do, but I was then fortunate to have got a camera from a friend of mine. So hard to buy 2nd hand gear from a stranger / website...
