Hi

I was pondering this question. I was wondering, can I get a print size of 100cm (on the long side) using a 10mp camera and CS5, or is that pushing it?

If not, can I get a print size of 100cm (on the long side) if I were to have a 10mp camera, CS5 & the Genuine Fractals Pro plug in, or is that still pushing it?

As an upgrade is impending, would, for example a 21mp 5D Mkii be capable of producing an image that is one metre on the long side (with or without GFP)? My goal here is to produce an image that holds resolution and clarity at 100cm.

Can't afford to go MF.

Thanks.

Scott

5D Mkii 5616 x 3744 (21.0 MP) / 300dpi = 46.8cm so in theory no, but for a print that size you wouldn't normally look that close to notice any drop in quality. Genarally it would be fine for a 100cm print.

Also an upscaled print from a 10mp will be fine from a short distance but the quality of the print will look worse close up.

I made a print 1.8m long from a 12mp D5000 which looked fine from just over a meter away from it but up close you could tell the resolution of the source image was not high enough.

should be fine to print so long as it is a clear in focus sharp picture.

if you are doing it at home you can drop the dpi to 180 and interpolate to the required size

It all comes down to how close people will look at it - as long as they are now wanting to look at it from a foot away with a magnfying glass you'll be fine

I used to have a 16"x24" from a 2 megapixel kodak pro (many years back) and everyone loved the quality of it...

It depends on the initial quality of the image. I've had images up to 30" long from a Canon 300D ( 6 Mp ) It also depends how you handle the images. Don't over sharpen.

Thank you. Yes I would hope that most people would understand that the correct viewing distance is more than 6 inches

According to onOne you can take a standard 12mp image at it's native size and blow it up to 6 feet without serious loss of detail via interpolation.
