Right this year I am going to be in the market for a Canon MP-E 65mm 5x magnification.
As I am a Nikon user I have a question !
Question....Can I get an adapter to fit the lens to a Nikon Camera and would it work OK.
If not then I will have to bite the bullet and buy a Canon camera.

If you have a scanner capable of decent film scanning, why not get a relatively high end film EOS - keep all the relevant automation at a fraction of the cost of a DSLR.

By all accounts the MP-65 is an awesome lens - enjoy!

Or get a cheap secondhand Canon body like a 400 to 550D you will be manually focussing anyway:)
The MP-E is an awesome lens my friend uses one:)
Does take some getting use to I had a go and could not handhold it steadily enough

The bottom line is that you have to use this lens on a Canon body due to the electronic aperture on the lens.....all shots would be at f/2.8 (theoretical).

As it has been said, you could get a cheap EOS film camera attach the lens and program it to your specific aperture then, press the DOFP (depth of field preview) and hold it, dismount the lens. This procedure will keep the lens at the chosen aperture. Be warned, the lens maybe damaged so proceed at your own risk.
You would be better severed by purchasing a cheap EOS DSLR. Also, at high magnifications, this lens gets very dark indeed and, a ring or twin flash system is unavoidable.

You be able see anything through the viewfinder though apart from blackness, it's dark enough a f2.8 @ 5x :) . This lens made me move from Nikon to canon. And don't forget to budget for a mt-24ex as it very difficult to use at high mags without.

Thank you all for the replies. I know all the technical aspects of the lens, apart from the fit to a Nikon camera. I thought it might come down to buying a Canon body, and if that is the case it will only be a digital body not film. I fully understand the lighting difficulties with this lens and that it takes ages to master it.
Thanks

I had the MP-E65 for a short while and tried it on a 550D, 7D and a 5D2 and the results were fantastic. A second hand 550D will set you back around £300 but with its 18Mp sensor you still have room to crop the photo if necessary. The 5D2 gave better results but even second hand they aren't cheap.

I bought mine in october 2010, it was going to be a xmas present, but I had an accident in the meantime and struggled to get the best use out of it. I ended up selling it after using it for about a month but it was a fascinating lens and I managed to get a few fantastic photos from it and they were all handheld. You'll need some good light to go with it for the best results though.

Just found this thread as its a lens I was considering - would a MR-14EX macro ring set up work fine with it as opposed to buying the mt-24ex ?

In a word, Andrew, No. The MR-14's light field doesn't illuminate the subject at higher magnifications. You 'll be okay at 1x but progressively loose it as you up the ante. The second issue is that of the focus assist lights....fixed on the MR-14 but directional on the MT-24....a huge benefit.
