So I've experienced the issue with a ring flash and short working distances :bang: - so lately I've been hand holding my ring flash

One day.... I'm going to get the MP-E 65mm and change from Sony to Canon, but I'd like to know how people get on with flashes?

I've read up about the MT-24EX, and it seems to be a good low hassle option - but not necessarily the best.

Does anyone have thoughts on this?

Dear Dancook

I'm by no means an expert but do have the MP-E 65/MT-24 combination and it is a doddle to use.

In terms of getting "the best" well that depends on your definition and how creative you want to be and your subject and how it can possibly be lit.

Gotta say the aforementioned does give images that no other lens can touch though. It is well worth the swop if you plan to be/are a serious macro shooter.

Just my 2p worth.

I'm a MP-e user with a MT24-EX my main issue with it is getting caught in bushes or just getting in the way at high magnification - as a light source i've not found anything better with the MP-e :)

Thanks both

Dogfish... you got me excited for a moment, 5D Mark iii ? huh :'(

As some one who has used Sony for macro stuff for the past few years and is making the change due to my Sigma 105 failing and the fact I pretty much only shoot macro.

This should be an interesting thread to read and hopefully more people comment.

Atm I'm still making my decision over the MT24 or just a 430ex ii

I'm not even taking a ring flash into consideration I just don't like the harshness it produces

At 5x magnification you've got an effective aperture of F16, looking through the viewfinder is pretty dark, (and your lens will probably shade the subject also) you've only got 40mm working distance and its difficult to get to get light onto the subject - Using f16 to maximise DOF at f16 and 5x magnification gives an effective aperture of f96 so you need loads of light , i tried my lens with a 550Ex when i first got it while waiting for my MT24-EX to turn up and it was difficult to say the least. the focusing assist lights on the MT24 are really useful.

I've been using the exposure simulator on my LCD screen so at about 3:1 the screen is lit with the expected exposure.

However I'm not sure I'll have the luxury with the older canon. Also without a flip screen, I think I'd need one of those angled viewfinder adaptors.

Don't say things like that :( you'll make me think about spending money

Never read at least that I can remember anyone ever using a angled viewfinder for use with the mpe65. knee pads might be useful though :D

How do you get the bugs on the ground though :D you'll need a roll out mat.
