Hi all,

After several years, have finally given up on Internet Explorer and yesterday came across Mozilla. Have recently changed over to BT Homehub (Total Broadband). Windows Mail was operating very quickly, but IE wasn't. In fact, painfully slow.

Did initially think it was the connection speed, but since WM was very quick, quickly ruled this out, so looked for an IE alternative...

Blimey, Mozilla has completely proved it's not the connection speed, but rather the slowness of IE. I ran a couple of speed checks, which revealed I'm getting 3.8 Mb per sec.

If anyone thinks their service is slow, you may be having the same problem, so before blaming the service, suggest trying Mozilla..

I've been using Mozilla Firefox for quite a while now and it (and Flock, Opera, Safari to name just 3 others) put Internet Explorer to shame!

I am always puzzled how Windows get away with producing such an inferior product and why so many people put up with it - and still use it?

Cheers,

Neil

yep, I know and whats more they haven't done anything to improve it, speed wise.

I've had PCs etc. since 2000 and haven't had IE run so slow until now. Was connected to BT Homehub only on Friday and pages took at least 30 seconds to load up on IE :cuckoo:

If you go onto user reviews on broadband services, many say the connection speed is slow so can't help wondering whether many of those issues couldn't have been solved by switching internet browser?

Using Mozilla means it's superfast with pages refreshing/changing in a split second and even photos on here flash up in a split second. Very impressed.

Don't understand why IE can't be as quick. There isn't much difference in layout or function between IE and MF..Mmmmmmmmm

much prefer firefox to ie. Better product all round and I believe more secure. I love the tab browsing of firefox. I believe IE 7 now does it, but knowing ms, properly badly.

I still use IE, but only when some sites don't support firefox fully, altough these are getting less and less n ow.

I use IE7, and prefer it to Firefox........I find it quicker too.........I gave up on Firefox because it sometimes fails to display pages correctly.

This is a bit like the Canon v Nikon debate: both have lovers and haters and no one will ever agree.

I've been using Firefox from when it was called Phoenix, it's not just the speed but how configurable it is with add-ons that's the killer punch for me. Not moved to version 3 yet, I normally go with the first beta, but this time I'll wait for the official release.

Firefox probably displays them correctly, it's just their designer was probably a bit too lazy to test the designs in something else than IE :p

IE7 is pretty slow on my PC, both the UI and rendering. IE8 beta is better, but not by much (UI is actually worse, but it renders pages faster than IE7).

Yeah, I've first tried version 0.2 if I remember well. Crashed on every odd occasion, but by 0.6 it got usable, so I kept it :D

No need to wait, I've been using it since beta 5 (or even 4) and it's been very solid.

Seamonkey could use an UI overhaul to get it closer to that of firefox because of themes and toolbar editing options.

Btw., the new Opera 9.50 is really nice.

Been using firefox for years, got sick of the insecurity of IE and constantly getting spyware or popups. Firefox rocks, however on the odd page where a developer cannot be bothered to code and test properly I use the IE Tab. Its available as an addon and you can right click and choose open in IE tab, or click the little render icon on the bottom to switch. Very handy, you can download it from Firefox's addon pages.

Just wait for another official version of Firefox 3 which is due on Tuesday... ;) You'll be blown away :)

IE sucks. It always sucked. Since beginning. It is also to blame for slow standard evolution of semantic languages, web insecurity and million of other things.

Good choice of using FF.

The only thing IE did was give me trip back to the days of dial-up:lol:

Does Firefox update automatically or are you given the option to see potential updates and then decide whether to download?

It will notify you about the updates and they will be installed with the browser restart. Critical ones (application) will be downloaded automatically, for the extensions you'll have the choice of downloading them yourself.

Not sure if it asks for major version updates, I think you might want to check out mozilla's site next week just in case it didn't. There should be something about it in the news announcement or release notes.

 What he said.....

Ive been using Firefox for absolutely donkeys. On the odd occasion I've tried switching back to IE (7 and 8Beta), and I really can't.

I like the extensions on FF, the usability, the overall package.

I'm on FF3 now (RC3), and there's no way I'm going back to IE now. The only time IE gets loads on my PC now is when my wife goes on Facebook, and when I go on TP to post on the Admin account.

I ve been using Firefox for a couple of years now but now Im finding it keeps crashing and freezing... so its back to IE for me. :(

FF in the versions > 3 was prone to very heavy memory leak problems. Most of these problems were repaired in version 3 (beta), which is fast and efficient.

Naturally, there is still a problem with stupid/uneducated/amateurish web designers building their web pages as "IE only" - well, what can I say, extreme professionalism... These people simply can't understand that, if properly build with semantic document tree and proper descriptive laguage as CSS, website will be rendered right by most of the browsers.

Sometimes, unfortunately, with the exclusion of IE. :)

ah i will try version 3 beta then. i have 2.0.0.4 at the moment and it says it is fully updated. i will go to the website.

I gather from some of your other posts that you know your way around a computer, but have you cleaned up recently with the likes of CCleaner, Registry Mechanic, Adaware or whatever equivalents you use?

Firefox does slow down if everything gets a bit loaded up with junk.

Hi. My first post in this forum, but thats beside the point. I'm glad to hear that someone else is having this problem Janice. I've been using FF for ages now but in the last three or four weeks its started crashing. I'm getting sick of it now (not FF but the crashing).

Mick.

Try cleaning your profile - backup your bookmarks and delete your profile folder, it's usually:
C:\Documents and Settings\Janice\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\somecrypticfoldername

Don't go back to IE - try either Opera (also in a portable version) or Firefox portable (v. 3 is also available).

Im on FF 3 beta now... and its MUCH faster... so we will wait and see about the crashes.

i havent, Neil, no. Now I am using 3 beta.. if it clogs up again... I certainly will

Safari kicks IE's butt, though I've found Firefox to be the God of browsers.

Ive been a firefox user for many years, I prefer opera though but just out of habbit i always open up firefox.

however someone writing a review on firefox 3 mentioned that IE7 (i have ie8) is better tha FF if you install IEPro add-on!!.. which im thinking of giving a try at some point.

[...] why so many people put up with [IE] - and still use it?

Because it's pre-installed since 1994.
But the tide is turning: 2 years ago IE still had a market share of 96%. It is now less than 80%...

I cant seem to get Opanda Exif Viewer to open in my right click menu now Ive installed FF 3 beta. If I remember rightly thats why I uninstalled it last time!! :bang:

Probably has something to do with the fact that as soon as you start up a windows computer it defaults to IE.

Firefox for me, never ever had a problem that couldn't be solved quickly. I like to use Thunderbird for my email as well.

I was always told that the IE operating system was not as safe an operating system as others such as firefox which is the system I use.

That'll be because they (opanda or whoever) won't have updated it to be compatible with the latest FF release... they'll catch up soon I'm sure :)

I think you're confusing an operating system with a web browser there.
As for the safety concerns, IE is integrated into Windows fairly tightly, Firefox is more isolated. Bug fixing speed tend to vary, but they've both become rather quick at fixing most of the bugs.

personally i can't get on with firefox, dont know why it just doesn't float my boat, now on the other hand have used opera for a couple a years now but found it not to be compatible with a few thangs i.e some jave. After hunting around i found flock six months back and never looked back, it's very good with flickr, facebook and other sites and i find it very reliable.
