mowse73's 52 week 11 Candid

Martin, I like it, and it's an interesting image, but like Sarah and Jean, it does seem to lack a specific point... Now I see what you were aiming for when you mention the branches leading to the root mass, but I think it's too far into the corner for me to work like that... The lower viewpoint suggested may work well to bring it back into the shot more.

Hi everyone. Thx for all the comments so far. I realy struggled for time this week and to be honest my entries are not too good. I went to the railway village in swindon expecting to take images of the lovely listed buildings, but was confronted with rubbish bins everywhere. So i looked up and went for repitition of form for my first shot of the chimneys and i found some street art on a wall. Could't decide which one to use.

I like the graffitti one. Good choice with making it a black and white.
Real interesting shot, would make a good desktop :)

Did you take the Graffiti Wall in B&W or is it a colour conversion?

I have nothing against B&W but I suspect that taking the colour out of the wall has caused it to lose some of it's impact and would be interested to see it in full colour. Use of colour is usually a strong point in grafitti, so to do this in B&W seems a bit unnatural to me.

I can see what you are aiming at with the pattern, but as you say the sky doesn't help and the houses could perhaps stand a bit of contrast boost.

I think going to B&W does make life harder, colour can be a great help in creating a strong image.

Thx Jean when i took the shot my vision was that the lines would converge onto the massive piece of earth and that would be my focal point. nevermind

Sorry I didn't get back to this sooner, but, yes, I see what you mine, but the branches of the tree are texturely rich and good colours, but the root ball didn't hold my attention so well. :)

On to Week 4: I love the graffitti shot and the b&w allows the imagination to put in as much - or as little - colour as it wants.

The rooftops: There's lots of detail in this -the brickwork, the walls, the repeat patterns, especially in the shape of the chimneys - well spotted, Martin. The sky doen't help any of us at this time of the year, so I think it's best ignored! :) So your struggles weren't in vain - 2 very creditable shots.:clap:

Jean

i really like the Graffiti, but i like b&w photos, i find it much more striking, i dont really care for the chimneys, i see what you were going for , just the subject doesn't really do anything for me, sorry :)

i think that Graffiti would make for an excellent light painting should you ever go back at night, i would love to see that:thumbs:

Hey, I think the graffiti shot is really good, would also liked to see it in colour for the comparison. I actually really love the chiney shot, i think its really fab, you mentioned the sky and i have to agree with you but would love to see you take this again on a rich blue sky! very welldone on two great shots :D

I agree with Ian Martin, I think you have a great take on street and different to most which is good. I think though the graffiti would be more dynamic in full colour and would really make it pop, might be worth another visit, unless you still have the origonal in colour....Mick

Well done on both street shots. The first is spot on, and the B&W works very well. I like the textures and repeating patterns in the second, the sky is a pain at the mo isn't it... I wonder if the second would be helped with a bit more contrast...

I like both of these
Agree with the earlier comment about seeing the first in colour though - it would be nice to see it in its full glory.

The second shot I really like. The repeating pattern is very effective and I'm going to go against the general consensus and say that I actually like the sky too. For me the plain white backdrop draws even more attention to the chimney pattern.
My only niggle is the tops of the trees in the foreground . . . not a lot that you could do about that though

Hi Martin, the colour version of your grafitti really pops, looks ace:thumbs:....Mick

Looking at the b&w then the colour I prefer the colour one Martin, more in ya face. Does it more justice.

hmmm , looking at both, i can't say i like either of them more than the other. love the colour on , really jumps at you , and love the B&W one ,for the gritty look

both top notch

Haven't had a chance to comment on yours yet. So many this year to find and check out!

Curved is quite a nice shot. What I find with these type of long exposures is that the rear red lights tend to work better that then headlights, but it's a really nice shot all the same

Poetry - really like this one. The framing of the shot is excellent. If he had his feet on the pedals it would have put the icing on the cake, but that's very minor. Great shot all the same. Have to commend the PP on selective colouring. Although, I'm usually not a fan of it, you've managed to pull it off. A bit of colour in the background would have been nice though ;)

Streets really cool. The grafitti is a bit lost though. Maybe a shot from one end of it with a slightly narrow DOF would have made it more interesting, but hard to tell without experimenting. Nice capture of the chimneys too. It's lacking a focal point though. Can't quite put my finger on it. But bang on theme all the same!

For me, it's the colour version of the graffiti shot. Also needs a little straighten to my eye as those bricks seem to slope off the image.

I prefer the chimney shot as the final "street" entry. I think that the "repetition of form" as you put it works really really well.

You're absolutely right about the sky though.

You could try a reshoot, and take 2 exposures. One for the chimneys, one for the sky. Then blend the two in whatever PP software you have. The way I'd do it is to set auto bracketing in the camera and just fire off three shots at +/- 2 stops to see how it looks. Just an idea though!

Ian.

Wow getting to see everyone's 52 is going to be tricky but it is amazing of all the different takes on the subjects.

I like the curved one but prefer the editied version.

Poems - fantastic what a lovely plain picture of hapiness

Chopped - we all know this was a difficult theme well tried.

Street love the colout version looks so much clearer to me, as I am not a lover of B & W

Will wait for Speed !!

Keep it up

I really like the graffiti shot, but can't decide which version I like the most. The colours are great, but I think the black and white one has more of an impact. Hmm, I can't make my mind up! I really like it though! :)

I prefer the colour version of the graffiti - it really jumps out at you. I might be tempted to crop off the brick wall at the bottom, thought, which I find slightly distracting (though not in the B/W version).

The border greatly improves the chimney shot, too - keeps the eye in the picture.

Hi everyone. Thx for all your comments so far. Here is my efoort for week 5. I am rather pleased with it I made a few attempts at this shot and then i noticed these two cyclists passing by and thought they would be ideal to place in the shot. In keeping with the theme my arse cheeks were twithching quite fast too, as i was expecting to see my camera flying down the road at any minute. I am not sure how the processing looks as i think my monitor needs calibrating.

Think I prefer the 2nd one. Both nice shots.

What I can't work out is how you got the camera out of the front window when it is hardly open more than a couple of inches??

That's great: I love the colours and there's a great sense of speed there! :)

Colour Graffiti is an excellent shot.

With your chimney shot, id crop it so that the 3rd chimney in from the left, became the first.

I hope you don't mind but I tried an edit myself too see what it would look like :p

Keep up the great shots!!

That speed shot is fantastic, I love it...

And is that a mk2 Renault Clio by chance? lol

Love the speeds shots - I think the second is my favourite. Great take on the theme - I tried a few car shots before binning the idea, but I was shooting from the roadside - your idea is much cleverer and effective. Well done!

Phil

Poem...Nice combination, processing works well.

Chopped...Plenty of wood in this weeks theme ;), might just need a touch of contrast.

Street....The colour version works better for me, the colours work well together and are very vibrant.

Speed....Well thats one way of getting a shot :D. Second one for me works the best as the cyclist are much sharper.

2nd shot for me Martin. The sharpness of the cyclists really helps the shot. Nice one!

Cheers, Rob

OK . . . Now we have 2 nutters in here that have stuck their cameras outside moving cars!!!! ;)
I hope it's not catching, because I'm not sure I want to take the risk!

A very brave shot Martin, but it's really, really paid off.
The second one for me and it's my favourite so far from your 52.

There's just enough definition to make out the detail in the road and hedges, the car's remained lovely and clear but you've still got a real feel of motion.
I'm not sure if you used different PP in the second one, but the hue and saturation look much better to me too.

All in all, a very good shot and one to be proud of this week

ohhh, great speed shot.. prefer the 2nd too.. sharper cyclists and background.. love the vivid colours

That second shot's great! Making my eyes go funny, and possibly a little high on the saturation, but working for me nonetheless.

Both cracking shots for this week. Second gets the  as the bikes are a little sharper whilst the first looks like they're heading to warp speed. Great colouring too.

Second one for me too Martin. I like the sense of movement and speed in it. The colours are vibrant too, which is a particular liking of mine. You might have gone one step further and tried to include yourself in the mirror in a kinda self portrait speed image:D
