Right, first of all, please bear any mind when replying that I'm a complete layman when it comes to websites etc.:D

I've been thinking of changing the company who host my website due to a few issues etc but have no idea how to go about it? I had a Wordpress site done a couple of years ago and I'm still happy with it, but I now want to move the complete site with images uploaded etc to somewhere, shall we say, a bit more reliable. Is this something that can be done pretty easily? If so, how do I go about sorting it, as I have no idea at all. I have no contract or anything with the current hosts.

Thanks for looking.

Gareth

Give people a chance :)

Moving WP sites can be a pita. I have done one or two.

With WP I usually do a one click install on the new host, install all the same plugins that were there on the old one. Then import from the old WP to the new one via the xml export thingy. You'd also need to copy the contents of the media/upload folders.

Once you think it might be working ok you change the dns on the registrar and wait for it to change to new host. Then see what's broken. Once everything is fixed and working ok then it is safe to cancel the old hosting.

Sorry Suz, I think I'm just used to the super speedy responses I get on here from everyone.:D
Thanks for the info, but I have no idea how to do any of this unfortunately. I paid a guy to produce the website and he organised the hosting etc. I just paid the bill to do it. I have a few issues with this hosting at present (the site's been down now for nearly a week) so I can't ask the guy for help as it's his hosting that I want to move away from. I wish I knew more about this sort of thing. :(

If you paid him to have it hosted then it needs to be reliable. That's what you are paying for. Make him fix it. A week is forever on t'internet! Duty of care etc.

Hope you have back ups of it in case this guy turns out to be a muppet...

You could give the company I work for a call http://www.skymarket.co.uk/contact_form.php
I work on the telecomms side of the business but I know they have installed Wordpress for some customers and will often quote for other things that need doing. I don't know how much Wordpress experience the support guys have but probably worth giving them a call.

I've just been talking to Vidahost, they will do the entire move for me.

Speak to the new hosts they should be able to move the entire site for you.

/edit should read all the posts before replying :)

Cheers for all the replies. All very much appreciated.

I think I'll look to have the entire site moved elsewhere and see if the new hosts can do all the "moving" for me. :)

Some hosts may move your site for you, some may charge for this whilst others will do it for free.

It is also my experience that they will only do this if it is a straight forward cPanel to cPanel move

Do you have log in details to the control panel where you are currently hosted?

Also what is the URL for your website?

Have you chosen a new host yet?

Yes I have the URL and login details for the site (both of which are currently not working) but have yet to chose an alternative host. I'll have to have a look at who offers what service for what costs.

The problem with that is you are going to need access to your current control panel in order to have any chance of moving your site/files to a new host.

If you want you can send me the details via PM and I can take a peek, but if as you say you have had 100% no access to any part of your site for the last week then it is not looking good I am afraid
