Need to free up space on my MacBook (solid state). A huge chunk (250gb at least) is made up of camcorder/gopro footage. Idea is to move all these files onto a HD and when I want to edit I just plug that in edit footage, create a 'master video/clip' and then have the clip on MacBook and other bits on HD. Use iMovie so is it simply a case of copying the files over drag and drop and then looking for that drive to import?

That should work. iMovie will import the files into "library" This holds all the clips and edits. However this will still be on the MacBook. This can get fairly large. However you could also move this onto the external HD when you've finished.

Seems to work, have copied them across but will test over weekend to make sure they haven't copied over as lower res etc...

There is a way I can copy the files 1 by 1 from iMovie but not able to group them together. Also, is there a way I can get a simple list of all the clips in finder?

to get a list of your clips you could use the search option and ask it to look for files with a suitable extension such as .mov. Choose "Open in finder" and you can the use the finder sort options ( date, size etc.)
It may also be a wise move that for each video you make to put it in a separate library. Libraries hold everything including original material edits, render files etc. This can mean that they are much larger than the files you imported. But selecting a new library for each project, once finished you can move this to the HD to free up space. If you need to work on it again it will contain everything you added to this particular video. It also enables you to add additional items if you wish

I moved all my videos to a synology drive, I got a gigabit network switch and put cat 6 Ethernet cables between all my devices.

I can now edit 4K videos on my PC directly from the synology drive without any problems.
