Basically whose done it?

Had a terrible months service from Canon repairing gear which was meant to take 7-10 working days now been over a month and still not sorted.

They don't seem to care, giving rubbish excuses and to be honest just had enough.

Thinking of selling up as protest and just moving to Nikon......

Sorry to hear you're having such a nasty experience with the customer service :(.

It's not nice when a brand you like using lets you down like that.

I'm sorry to hear about your troubles with getting your camera repaired. But to be fair, the grass isn't always greener on the other side.

What sort of excuses are they throwing at you and how often are they keeping in contact?

to be honest nikon has authorized repair centers as i think canon do(may be wrong), they may just be busy..im a nikon man myself but see no point in selling all your canon gear to buy nikon just because they havnt repair your gear quickly..

its a case of cutting your nose off to spite your face in my option..

get hold of them again and see what the problem is...

Do it, do it, Nikon is better haha

(that and you're local so there'll be at least two Nikon users registered here and living in the area ;))

I've done twice because, first time because of the horrible MKIII focussing issues and Canons inability to fix an EF 400mm f/2.8 lens, second time because the MKIV didn't deliver for me.

Nikon just does what it says on the tin, you only need to look round all these forums for guys with AF issues and guys having to have their gear continually calibrated and their all Canon users.

Theres probably a Nikon user with similar horror stories.......

Yeah - maybe one! :bonk:

Seriously though, as I've read even just recently, there seems to be a plethora of angst over Canon repairs/service.

What's the issue and who have you sent it too? For an authorised Canon service centre, I've used two - Colchester cameras and Elstree and both have been excellent, returning my item in 5 days.

When my 40D went wrong and was covered by Jessops warrenty, they sent it off to non canon authorised repairers, who told me it would be fixed and shipped back to me in two days. But they told me that every two days for 8 weeks and then finally admitted they couldn't fix it after I kicked up a fuss.

Never had AF or calibration issues, but then neither do I get evangelical about any kit. I suppose the swap only makes sense if you haven't much kit, but once you've bought into a system it's expensive to swap.

I'm actually in Canterbury now at uni, but do pop back to Herts regularly enough ;)

Basically while i was on holiday my 7D (which i bough brand new in March started playing up) and my 100-400mm image stabilizing went crazy.

The lens problem was re-occuring and only in January had Canon fixed it, so 8 months later it happened again (i had not dropped or damaged the lens in any way to cause this, which canon tried to make out).

Turns out the 7D needed a new shutter. Pretty bad for a £1000+ camera bought in march.
Both lens and camera got taken into canon where they outsourced them to h lehman who have been great. But i don't know why the lens got sent there. Lehman sent 7d back today (should be here tomorrow) but told me canon wanted the lens back (i was confused), phoned canon they didn't know why. Phoned again today saying i will come pick up lens as i need it for saturday. But they then proceed to tell me it is coming back to canon to get fixed as currently not fixed!!! So why send it off somewhere for 3 weeks not for it to get fixed.

All a bit of a joke, i've done all the running, phoning canon etc. Recieved no emails from them apart from the one telling me they'd sent it to lehmann.

Fed up. The joke is the first time i rung canon after they'd had them for about 3 weeks the woman was all like sorry then goes 'but sir we do tell our customers to not expect a repair for 7-10 working days.' to which i replied well why have you had mine for 3 weeks?

I am gonna cost the swap and see what nikon can offer

Do it... it's your destiny Luke...feel the power of the Dark Side...

I guess this is the problem with the internets. People post to eject their playthings from their perambulator and don't take a breath and think about what they are doing and how much money they will lose. I expect you see it with canon more because they sell more and therefore they are busier.

Good luck with you sale threads and moving to nikon!

Urmm not really, i have asked for advice. At no point have i said i'm swapping for definite. I haven't even tried any nikon gear, i might hate the feel of it etc i have seen good results with it though along with canon gear. Like its been said nikon might have problems too, but atm canon have ****ed me off and i am just assesing my options

Good. I am not going to scream 'stay canon' at you because, quite frankly, a camera is for taking piccies with and both makes can do that. However, please do go hands on with the cameras, make sure the lenses from nikon come in a range that will cover what you used with the canon and most of all consider the monetary loss that may be incurred changing over. I am not emotionally attached to canon, more financially; I use canon because my first DSLR was the 300D and it was the only one on the market at the time that was really affordable to an amateur.

Looking if i sold my current canon kit i'd get near on £3000 that could be my budget at least for now

My canon kit

7D £1000
40D £400
50mm £55
tamron 90mm macro £200
sigma 10-20 £280
100-400 £900
remote release £10

-£900 as the 100-400 dos,nt work as stated by you

errm not throwing anything out of the perambulator but Nikon have been outselling Canon since 2008 :) First month it happened reported here:-http://www.amateurphotographer.co.uk/news/Nikon_overtakes_Canon_in_camera_sales_Breaking_News_news_272854.html

To answer the question I changed to Nikon in Feb this year. To be fair I had no real reliability issues with Canon and neither have I had any with Nikon. The Nikon D700s are blindingly good though :D

Fair enough, thanks for correcting me! :)

but it's gettin fixed, will be back with 6 month guarantee, full clean and new IS component so basically a new lens.

sorry dude if i was a canon user i would,nt touch it with a barge pole its gone wrong.....TWICE

When I was buying my first DSLR I went with Nikon for two resoans,

They give me a 10% discount

I've owned two Canon compact cameras and they have both failed on me, they where both repaired but I just felt that there quailty wasn't up to standard, probably the DSLRs are differnt, but I wasn't prepared to give them a third chance

I jumped from a Canon IXUS to Nikon and haven't regretted it once

I think you're probably being a bit optimistic about how much you will get for your gear?

Actually if you get the prices you are quoting the move won't be as bad as you probably think to get a similar range of lenses.

Taken from Mifsuds prices (and you may be able to better them):

D300s new £1100
D200 s/h £430
Nikon 50 1.4 AF sh £150
Tamron 90 Macro s/h £250
Sigma 10-20 s/h £330
Nikon 80-400 VR s/h £950

Total £3210

Not too bad for a like for like swap!

Just remember-

No matter what they tell you, the dark side does not have cookies :nono:

I moved from Canon to Nikon a few months back, got my D700 and Nikon 24-70mm does everything I ask of it and high ISO is very clean. Not sure if I'd move solely because the Canon service wasn't great, it could and probably has happened to Nikon owners as well.

Nikon 80-400 VR s/h £950

Ed, have you ever used a Nikon 80-400 VR? Compared to the Canon 100-400 it's a positive embarrassment. Nikon make many fine lenses, but I cannot for the life of me work out what they think they're doing with that one.

That sounds really unfortunate.

In the last couple of years I've put about 90 lenses through the Canon facility at Elstree and the average turnround (excluding transit time) is about 3-4 days. If something's really important they can do it in 1-2 days. (I don't ask for that too often.) On the other hand, when I send something to Nikon at Kingston I don't usually expect to see it back for 2-3 weeks at least. And I expect to pay a fortune too.

I'm not trying to excuse Canon - bad customer service is bad customer service, end of. But it does seem to me that your experience has been atypical.

On the other hand, I have a suspicion that my Canon lenses need more servicing and repairs than my Nikon ones. I really ought to examine the data. I know I send a lot more lenses off to Canon than to Nikon, but then I own a lot more Canons and they have higher utilisation. So maybe the failure rate is comparable. When I get some spare time I'll try to bottom this issue.

No Stewart, afraid not, or perhaps that should be fotunately not ;)

I was just comparing like for like with focal lengths. The only item I have used in that list would have been a D200 (which I loved).

Sony inherited Minolta's beercan...

It's not that bad :D ... however I would go 300 f4 AF-S + 1.4TC every time rather than the 80-400VR, plus it will also take the 1.7TC and still produce pleasing results.

I've admired Nikon gear for a long time but never taken the plunge and bought one of their cameras. Maybe if I win the lottery ?
