Have been given the chance to move to a MacBook pro by my work. Its much better than my current computer so Im taking it and not really interested in the mac/pc debate. I like both but simply the computer is much better and faster than what I have so it's a no brainer.

Question for you people is what should I look out for as far as transferring files and the like.

As far as photo stuff goes I'm using LR3 on an external HD, will that just run as normal once I install it or do I need to change things for it to work?

Any advice/tips much appreciated.

Appel do a service where you take in your old PC and they'll transfer it to your mac for free
 
Reinstall Lightroom as already suggested. The s/n will work on mac and PC so no trouble there. If you have the catalogue and image file on the external drive, then when you start Lightroom you need to direct it to the external drive and the location of the catalogue files.

All in all no big deal
 
Thanks for the help. I thought it should work but was worried I was hoping for the best. Cant wait to get my hands on it. :)

So what happens when my iMac arrives and I install W7 so I can dual boot?

So I got a MacBook pro to have a go with today. Installed LR3 and tried to start it from the external drive but it says it can not open the catalogue because it can not write to the external drive. Have I done something wrong or could there be a security setting put on by my admin people at work to disable such things?
 
No idea what its formatted as. It has previously been used on my windows machine so im guessing it is wrong, I can reformat one of them and retry. Thanks for the help
 
Most likely to be ntfs format. You can get programs that allow you to write to such volumes. I couldn't name one for you though, I have only just for my first mac in a number of years today!
 
For the sake of saving sanity, I'd just copy all your files directly onto your new Mac.

I find Macs aren't very good at maintaining connections to peripheral devices like external storage, which gets very irritating.

I have an iMac, but I don't think that there will be much of a difference between it an a MacBook as far as connections go.

When connecting a Mac and a PC, I find it is easier to connect from the Mac to the PC. I find my Mac is stubborn and won't cooperate with my Windows box very easily when I try to connect to it, so it's just easier to connect from the Mac. But I suppose that's just what I'm used to. You may find the opposite.

If your external drive is NTFS, definitely consider reformatting it for your Mac. There's just no point in having to fart around with software and hacks and voodoo in order to use external storage. It's bad enough as it is without adding in an extra layer where things can fail.

Anyways, just my $0.02 from what I've found with my Mac.
 
Update: my last drive was already formatted to fat32 so I'm using it just fine. It will read from the ntfs drives but not write to them, which for the minute is fine, I only have the MacBook as a loner for a week to see how I get on with it and then may have it for keeps in a month or so and will come back and change things then.
