i need some help im trying to place a image of a person from a scanned pic on to a blank canvas.
to elaborate the original contains a lot of clutter and would be a right pain to clone out.
btw im using photoshop cs5.
You need to select the part of the image you want to keep (quick selection tool/lasso tool/ etc) then add a small amount of feather (select refine edge) about 1 pixle is enough (it softens the edge of the join) now copy and past it onto your new background.
Theres several ways of doing it, probably the easiest to explain is this.
Open your image in photoshop, use the quick selection tool to select your subject (hold down ALT to remove bits from the selection if you need to) When you have it all selected go to select/modify and feather, add 1 or 2 pixles in here (this softens the edge and makes the join harder to see after)
Now on the layers palette is a background layer, by it is a padlock click and drag that to the trash icon on the layers palette (that unlocks the background layer) now CTRL+SHIFT+ I to invert the selection and hit delete.
You should now have a sort of chequered background around your subject (thats the transparent bit) now on the layers palette click the new layer icon, then click and drag it below your subject, now if you want a white background just fill this layer with white, I used 2 colous and the filter render colouds filter for my BG.
