Moving from iMac to iMac

Yup, not had to do it yet but use a firewire or usb and locate the migration assistant located in the applications folder > utilities folder and follow the prompts.
 
you can also use an ethernet cable ... takes longer, 12 hrs for 1TB ...... but I had no problem ... just connect them up before you start

When you set up your new iMac it'll ask you whether you want to create from an existing Mac or a "fresh" install.

I did a completely fresh install when I set my new iMac just so that I could decide on what apps I wanted to move and how I wanted to set up my data etc.

One thing to ensure is that you have all your passwords etc to hand including actual install files of older versions of software if you haven't upgraded to latest versions etc.

best thing to do is... as others have said... fresh install including all of your apps

then... to migrate the user(s) folders over from your old iMac to the new one... connect a firewire cable between the 2 machines... boot your old iMac holding down the "T" key... which will boot it into "target disk mode"

once booted.. a firewire icon should be bouncing around the screen of your old iMac... and a HDD icon appear on your new iMac

once that has occured... open migration assistant located in the applications folder > utilities folder and go from there... if you have setup all of your apps initially... there is no need to copy over the apps... just the user account(s) that you need

once done... you can disconnect the firewire cable... and be good to go

Thanks for that. Old Mac is currently flying along since I did the latest OS update so I'll cross my fingers for now but I'll keep this in mind for if/when I do have to migrate. (y)

Have you thought about bunging an SSD in it?
 
n addition to an SSD... have you maxed out the RAM..... if not... highly recommended for max speed / performance.. it is a pretty simple process on the iMac... and the ram is not that expensive

I think I'm ok as far as ram is concerned but I have looked into upgrading and I think I could probably just about cope with that.

im not sure id be tackling an ssd upgrade myself on an iMac - having watched it being done i was happy to pay £75 for the upgrade to be done
 
true... depending upon exact year / model (fabs did mention it was from 6 years ago)... replacing the HDD with an SSD can be a huge PITA

i was referring to swapping / upgrading the ram.... which is what i thought fabs was referring to

Got my new iMac just after christmas and never looked back, good decision as the newer models are just so much better. I work on a Technical support desk and helping customers with their new Mac's always made me tempted ;)
