Moving from Canon to Nikon

Hi all,
Please don't throw stones at me!

I found out today that my Step dad is moving to Spain next year and he has said I can have all his gear :thumbs:

I am still very new to photography and only just learning my 400D so figured it would be better to move to the Nikon system now and get some practice in.

Knowing nothing at all about Nikons I was wondering what system I should go for to replace my 400D, Sigma Flash, 18-55 & Nifty Fifty, plus a 3rd party grip, 6 batteries (2 original).
I have no idea about the lenses my old man has, all I know it that it's a D300 body.

For the most part, I like shooting studio portraits and the odd landscape.
How much should I let my kit go for?

D300 is a big step up from your 400D, you'll learn to appreciate the extra controls and professional build.

I'd wait to see what lenses he has before you plan on buying any, he might have all the lenses you need, or you may have to flog them all and start from scratch.
 
So... he moves to Spain, and bins off a brand new hi-spec Nikon. Does he realise airlines allow you to take personal belongings with you in a bag?
 
Most would suggest sticking with Nikkor lenses although Sigma do make some real gems and are almost always worth the money you pay for them.

You can pick up a SB-600 speedlight which is good value for money and gives you 90% of a SB-800 with around a £100 saving. Also a Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 D can be picked up for as little as £65 and is a very sharp lens obtained for cheap money and will suit portrait taking very well.

Sell your step dad's gear [if you can] on TPF and buy more canon gear with the money. :D :canon:

It's just a camera dude, not the space shuttle. ;)

Why not wait until you have all the stuff together and then see what you like best about which bits and what stays and what goes.
 
I just made the move from Canon to Nikon last week. It wasn't an easy decission, and tbh, atm i'm not 100% sure it was the right move.

I sold both my 400D, 40D and a load of lenses, and got the D300, a nifty fifty and a sigma 18-200 OS, but the weather's been miserable so not really been able to put it all to good use atm. But the nikon feels clumsy, buttons all over the place and a really awkward menu i've found so far. But the reason I got it was for the high iso performance and what i've tested so far doesn't disappoint.

But for daytime stuff, I don't think the D300 is any better than the 40D atm, again it's early days though, but don't listen to all the nikon fanboys :)
 
hi belial im with you dont worry about the buttons it just takes time to get used to a more superior system:woot::woot::woot::nikon::nikon:
 
I have to say that the menu system on the Nikon is the sole reason that I have Canon!

When I was getting into digital I tried just about every body available and for the budget I had available the 20D was just far more logical. The Canon lenses make more sense too.

Nikon is like learning another language. It's OK once you become fluent and if you a are an experienced tog, like Diego, you can translate the systems. When you are still a beginner and trying to learn photography in the first place, adding a second language was not something I was prepared to do.

Both systems have their flaws.

Good luck with the Nikon. Best get yourself a phrasebook, sorry manual. :)

Hardly lol.

It's taken me about a month to learn the 1Ds. After the 20D and the 5D (which are near enough identical layouts) the 1Ds was a right pest! I still have to take the camera from my eye to adjust things I could do intuitively with the 5D.

And at the end of the day, any camera is a beginners camera, it's a box with a hole. :D It's getting it to do the things that you want is the tricky part especially if the menus don't make sense to your logic system. Hence FOR ME Nikon was a non starter.
