moving files from lightroom 5 to elements 13

Hi folks,
I have a wee query which I'd really appreciate some help in clarifying. I'm fairly new to photography, I edit my images mainly in lightroom 5 and I've recently purchased elements 13. after starting an edit in lightroom I would like to move my images over to elements for something such as stitching together a panorama, in lightroom I right click on the highlighted images, I go to 'edit in' then 'merge to panorama in photoshop' at this point elements opens but there are no images. A window appears with a message saying that elements editor couldn't be launched.
I contacted Adobe who told me that elements doesn't support 16- bit images but lightroom recommends using 16-bit files for maximum image quality.
Am I missing something obvious? If anyone can throw some light on this for me it would be appreciated.

Set LR to export the images as 8 bit? I'd guess this is part of the cut down nature of Elements.

Thanks Toni, I wondered if that could be an issue, does that mean that full photoshop can handle 16-bit files?

Yes. Ps will handle 16 bit files.
