hi guys and gals
hoping for some advise/info. I have been offered(and excepted) a job near to Oswestry and was looking for advice on places to live. renting to start with until i see how the job gos then possibly buy after. looking for somewhere max 30 mins travel of Gobowen area. i like my peace and quiet and villages but don't mind being in smaller towns if its tucked away from to much noise:D. love walking so pack on and good walks without driving would be a bonus. mind you supermarkets are handy as well.
obviously it depends what come up on the rental market but areas to look would be great, what is Oswestry itself like to live? as it seems there are more rentals coming up there. cheers

I lived in this are for about 12 years, firstly in the middle of nowhere just north of Welshpool, and for a couple of years in Llansantffraid. Oswestry is a bit of a dying town, lots of empty shops etc, but its not a bad place to live. If you like the hills, then you need to look west, living in Wales has quite a lot of benefits, generally lower rent, rates and free prescriptions! We looked at Ellesmere when we first moved to the area but discounted it as it's too flat!!

Chester and Shrewsbury will; be your main (nice) big shopping towns so good links to those will be helpful. Oswestry, Welshpool and Wrexham are all ok for supermarkets.

BTW the estate agents in these areas are a nightmare, a lot only do houses as a side line as they are mainly land agents, they tend to only open on a Sat morning at the weekend, which makes it difficult if you want to move area, to actually see anything at a weekend without taking time off!!!

anywhere up this way is nice .depending on your budget and actual needs .as david says living just over the border in wales does have a lot of advantages .usually in the way that david described but also generally the hospitals are less crowded to. the oswestry area is quiet central to and will probably be a lot cheaper than moving towards wrexham (getting bad for drugs) or chester which is rather expensive but both are within a 30-40 minute drive and your only a hour or so drive from the welsh coast.

it also depends whether your a stay home evenings type or a down the pub type . (picture a american werewolf in london) pub type scenario .:woot::woot::woot:

Anywhere in the immediate area is fine really. I lived on Welsh Walls in Oswestry itself for a few years, and even that was fine (bit noisy on Saturday night but otherwise quiet). We also lived in the country near St Martins which was very quiet indeed! A few things to bear in mind. The Oswestry Bypass is a nightmare at rush hour - getting across it from Gobowen even more so! The A495 between Whittington and Whitchurch was classed as (maybe still is?) THE most dangerous road in Britain, and in recent years seems to have got worse. I certainly don't remember it being rammed with TG group trucks all the time when I was there which it now is. (Where I worked was juts off it between Whittington & Ellesmere and the in-laws lived in Whitchurch, so made plenty of use of it!).

Oswestry is still far cheaper than round where I am now - in fact that's why we moved there in the first place! I still want to move back there. There has been a lot of new development there since I lived there, especially down on the old market site. The town centre still looked the same really when I last passed through. When I lived there it was a very lively place at the weekend - which starts on Thursday - not surprising as every other establishment almost is a pub on the high street! People in Shropshire are very friendly, but they drive like complete arseholes.

cheers guys thats really helpful. i am near exeter at the moment so will be a b****r finding something there, long distance. quiet or even back end of beond is ok with me.
i went to school in llandrindod and lived in borth for a number of years, so know wales well. are there any bits of the towns to avoid? where is welsh walls? is it one to avoid, then.
ive got a mouth or at a push two to find somewhere. so might need a few more pointers on good/bad spots if you dont mind a few more questions. please excuse typos_my phones a pain

Welsh Walls is a street, no need to avoid at all. Willow Street and church street form the main high street, then you have Bailey street which is permanently pedestrianised and has all your small shops, the market is held at the top end of it at Bailey head. Cross street is pedestrianised during the day.

The only places I would avoid are Wrexham and the outlying villages, Coedpoeth, Rhos etc etc, the whole area is rough as hell compared to Oswestry IMO.

thank you mate, much appreciated, i will get my search properly underway and the end of this month
