Mounting Photos

I've used spray mount for years. Never had a problem. Be careful to read the instructions though.

if prints are fixed to a backing board, what happens if the owner wants to change the frame (e.g. a bigger frame)?

Ok I suppose this could make it difficult (although not impossible) to change to a larger frame, however the OP has already chosen this method by trying a self adhesive board (which was unsuitable) and he also states his ideal method would be dry mounting, which is outwith his present budget.

Therefore I'm sure this would still be a suitable and affordable solution to his problem.

Or if you wish to hinge mount them, acid free adhesive tape could be purchased from a local framers trade supplier.

it's an unlikely scenario i know... i'm going to be selling mounted and framed prints at an event soon... i'm only using relatively cheap (but presentable) frames so people can by a finished item. but was just thinking if they wanted to by their pwn frame.

do you buy a fresh piece of backing board, or just use the board that comes with a picture frame?

I had the same problem a few years ago with customers complaining their 20"x 16" portraits were rippling.

I tried a few different solutions and finally settled with 'Daler Rowney "XTRA TAK" mount board', I have some 6+ year old sample prints which are still perfectly flat, even though they have often been stored in the boot of my car (even during winter).

Alan.

Thanks Alan, I'll give that a try.

The print will be stuck to the Sticky board and then that will be taped to the back of a mount. Switching to a larger frame is not a problem, it just involves cutting a larger mount.

haha, I'll have to rethink, the masking tape hasn't lasted long (it's only cheap stuff I think)... might have to get branded masking tape or a stronger tape? maybe that brown gum tape..?

Masking tape isn't intended to last long, it's meant to be removed easily after decorating :-)

I use framers tape for affixing photos to the back of mounts.

that's exactly what i need! does it require wetting (like gum tape), or is self-adhesive like regular sticky tape?
where's the best place to buy on the high street? :)
don't have a bespoke arts/crafts shop near me and would love to get some tomorrow :(

No it doesn't require wetting, it's just like regular rolled tape. If you didn't require it for tomorrow I'd post you a roll.

for what it's worth I had some photos 18" x 12" exhibited fairly recently...

I was told to mount them on mounting board and fix them with 3M PHOTOMOUNT

I went to hobbycraft and bought their ownbrand option - at the start it looked fine, but after a week of display, the photos had started to wrinkle on the mount and didn't look so great :(

my colleagues who used the photomount did not have the same problem!

please bear in mind the photos weren't double mounted - just applied straight onto the surface of the mounting board.

another point to add is to put some backing board on your mounting - otherwise your mounts will curl

hope this helps!

ah that's really thoughtful thank you!
i'll have a look in town in my lunchbreak tomorrow, or will order some online maybe...

as an aside, i'm looking to sell some A3 mounted prints (but not framed)... I've got some cellophane bags to put them in, but thinking they should have some kind of board in the back of the bag to make it more rigid/presentable?
