Does anyone have any sensibly priced UK alternatives to this as a means of mounting a flash horizontally?

My aims are:
  • to get the flash closer to the umbrella shaft or equivalent
  • to remove pressure on the hotshoes of the flash and pocketwizards

Thanks Colin.

As I understand it this still leaves the flash suspended by it's hotshoe (which for me means in turn suspended by the pocketwizard hotshoe) - I suppose I could wedge something in between the flash and the base of the bracket.

Any other suggestions?

I'm going to make a couple this week that'll work like the one you linked to, but will mount into one of those "coldshoe screw things"! Very technical, I know ;)

Will post pics when I've made them. They won't be hard to make at all.

It is suspended by the hotshoe but I have the flash 'resting' on the shaft or bracket.

The Pocketwizard I have now rigged up so it is screwed directly onto the bracket just above the flash.

Do what I did... Go to a hardware store and buy a right-angle fixing bracket for about 50p.

Make sure the screw holes are in the right place (and if not, drill new ones) and then slide one side into the hotshoe clamp (above the umbrella hole). If you've got it right, the side of the flash will rest on the bottom and you'll be able to see the info on the back clearly as well.

I'll try and get a picture taken later to show you but it's really simple to do... As long as you've already got the umbrella/flash bracket. :)

Yup - make your own....

Total cost: about £4 (although to be fair I had the hardware laying around)

Nice job - looks nice and sturdy :)

It's pretty good, allows the units to be put at pretty much any angle, and they fire pretty much along the axis of the umbrella stand as well (useful for small umbrellas)

Had to butcher some old kit for the thumbscrews though - they're REALLY expensive!

I decided to design and make a bracket whilst at work. Well, it was either that or do some actual work...... ;)

Couple of slight mods for the next attempt. I'll bend the bracket a bit more so the flash fires more at the centre of the brolly. Also, I'll cut a hole through so I can attach it directly to the top of the brolly adaptor as well as being able to use the coldshoe.

Obviously it helps having a £200,000 waterjet cutter at work that you can program and run. ;):D

Both sound like very sensible mods - but already looking very useable!

I (not having the benefit of such machinery!) ended up going with Colin's suggestion - was cheaper than FITP (for what I think is the first time).
