Hi there,
here is my first attempt at using my 7D for video editing together the footage. Overall I am happy with the outcome although there is one shot where the colour went a bit wild that I am scratching my head about.

Anyway please take a look and give me any feedback that you have. I plan to make a few more clips next year so have a bit of time to practice.

Thanks
Pete

Overall, I liked it, there were a lot of similar clips at the beginning and more variety would keep interest and help prevent switching off, some good angles and use of slow motion when music slowed.

I like the video.

I do some BMX and downhill as well and I find that static shots are great but there were too many of them. maybe some shots where you follow the bike down the track a bit perhaps.

I do the video for a free running group and put the camera on the tripod and hold the tripod under my arm and use it as a makeshift crane for smoother follow shots.

Thanks for the feedback. I agree that I need to add in some moving shots. Not sure of the best way to do this as following a
Rider down a section of track wielding £1500 quids worth of camera gear doesn't sound like fun to me. Have seen a few videos where they have rigged up the camera to a zip line and have got some amazing shots from that. Would be interested to know if anyone on the forum has tried this set up?

Nice work, and mostly it has good feel and pace. Apologies if these are too picky but I have a couple of things IMHO, I would like to hear some natural sound just give it some impact particularly when the bike is close to the camera. Perhaps trying to cut closer to the music, not all the tiime or it can become a bit of a procession. A couple of times there is a little bit of unintentional camera movement on the end of shots that are a little intrusive and the appearance of somebody in the shot for no apparent reason. As was mentioned above a lot of the shots are fairly similar a bit more variety would really lift it, not only the angle used but also the choice of lens. I understand you don't want to strap £1500 of camera gear gear to a mountain bike but some of the clip-on cameras produce some reasonable quality images particulary if you treat them or you could go the way of Super 8mm cine film, nice quality with the right camera but pricey once you pay for processing and tele-cine transfer. Or you could always hire a decent on-board camera system.

Overall a decent promo video, I like it anyway

Thanks Raglansurf for the comments. Was in two minds about droping some of the bike sounds into the edit and for one reason or another they didn't make the cut but totally agree with you that this would be a nice addition to the clip.

Again agree about the dodgy bit of camera shake. I think this came about from either me using a silly setup to get the shot or just not locking the tripod down when filming. As for the random person dropping into one shot I was gutted about this but didnt realise until I got home and started stitching the video together. I tried cropping her out of the clip but it just didnt flow so took the decision to leave the random in!

I have spent today looking into building a cable cam and it looks fairly easy so have got this on my to do list. I have seen some really nice shots using cable cams so really want to get something together for the next edit.

Thanks, for the feedback.

That trail looks sweet! Seriously wish I had something to ride as good as that locally

Nice video

The vid is a mix of one main loop around my local forest which is about 5 minutes bike ride from my house in Bracknell. Would defiently miss having the trails on my doorstep if I were to move house!

Was some of the footage speeded up? Looked a little unnatural on some of the twisty stuff, dunno if that's down to the frame rate on vimeo?

Hi Iodious, some of the footage was slowed down a couple of notches but the rest was at normal speed. Aidan the rider is pretty handy and the trails flow really well so getting a bit of speed was no problem. Already looking forward to getting some more footage, just need the weather to co-operate!

Hi pete,

Just had a look at your video. I really impressed! I've been cutting my teeth on something similar and thought I'd share my limited experiences with you.

I love some of the angles you've used and the slow panning. I'm using a Sony camcorder, but I believe you're using a DSLR, which worked really well. I like the shallow depth of field you can get with these cameras.

I borrowed a GoPro for some of my shots and I think it works if you can get more variety in your edit. I don't recommend strapping your camera to a bike, but GoPros are really tough and lightweight, so, if you ever get the chance of using one, then that would do the trick.

Your video work and quality are top, so there are only a few improvements to knock it up a level!

Keep up the good work!

Here's my efforts (just an initial first edit & not for the masses yet please!)

Hi Dayve,
Just taken a look at your video and like it. If you are out riding with your mates I know how much of an arse it is to ask them to stop wait for a bit ride a section and then go back and do it again if soemthing isnt quite right with the shot! Defiently getting a Go Pro HD 2, just waiting to sort out the best route for getting one but if all goes well there will be one under the tree at Christmas. Looks like you have some great landscape to build into your next video, and maybe a bit of a soundtrack (however keep some of the bike and puddle noises, I wiped these out of my edit and regret not having them there now). Anyway have fun on the bike and with the camera as well.
cheers
pete
