Hey,

Anyone on here combine both hobbies?

I have had both hobbies for a while now but never actually combined the two....

Does anyone take their camera out on the bike? If so what protection do you use?

My area is hardly mountainous but I do thetford forest etc....and want to start exploring further afield..

Regards

I don't do much mountain biking but I do a lot of snowboarding and most of my pictures are snowboard based. When I'm up on the hill I have my gear in a Dakine sequence bag, which is specific for action sports. There is a new bag company called F Stop that do a similar thing.

I'll be taking my camera gear with me when I go mountain biking in Wales in April, can use the weight of the kit as the excuse for my unfitness!

A few years back I used to use the Ortlieb Front handlebar Panniers. (inc Mapcase)
It could hold a small Video Camera and my SLR Camera wrapped on and old towel.
If I was on a Trial Quest then all I carried was a small waterproof Canon film camers & GPS.

i just used a lowepro rucksack i think?

i bought a GT avalanche 2.0 last year for exactly this reason, did i ever get round to it, no lol. After i bought my bike i had a drunken accident and broke my finger (which still isn't 100% fixed) and i don't have the motivation atm to go for a ride. So i've got a brand new bike sat in my conservatory, which has covered about 12 miles in its life.

lol I brought a GT I-drive in Nov 2006 and I think I have been out on it 5 times....I had some serious problems with the bottom bracket and lost interest/moitvation....now trying to get back into it....

I think I am going to use my lowepro and put in some bubble wrap....lots and lots lol

I ride my bike a lot more than I use my camera, but I am yet to take my camera out. Since I ride dirt and street, having a camera in your bag takes up a lot of room, and if its just a casual ride, you don't want a bag at all.

I ride 3 or 4 times a week, weather and light permitting and incidentally yeaterday was the first time I took my camera with me.

I actually carried mine in my camera case inside a padded laptop rucksack with my tripod sticking out the top! I have to admit though, I didn't attack the downhills like I usually do, I'm clumsy enough at the best of times!

I was riding alone yesterday but myself and some friends are going for a weekend in the South West in a couple of weeks, so that will be my first opportunity to catch some 'action'. I couldn't offer any advice though other than that I felt a little off balance with such a big pack on. I don't know if you can get hard cases for cameras but I'll be having a look with the intention of putting it in my smaller rucksack. Maybe carry an older, cheaper camera?

Here's a few from my solo trip yesterday. All seen en route! It's amazing what you miss when you're concentrating on the riding!

Hi AJ,

I am an MTB'er and photographer. I actually got into photography because of my MTBing. Taking shots of the beautiful landscapes I was in on my bike is how my photography interest developed.

I have recently bought a DSLR but haven't taken it out on my bike yet. All of my MTB photos are with my trusty P&S Canon IXUS. This fits in my Camelbak easily - I have a Lowe Pro case that clips onto my pack straps for easy access!

If you search the Singletrackworld forum there are a few people who do carry a DSLR on whilst riding. The preferred method is a case that clips on the front of your pack so the camera bag is across the chest.

Simon F Barnes is an amateur tog who was voted Singletrack photographer of the year. This is how he carries his kit.

Also take a look at the Seb Rogers website and blog for invaluable advice on MTB photography.

Hope this helps

I love biking AND photography I have a Specialized Rockhopper and a Trek Remedy 5 however I have no desire to take my camera whilst cycling. Not sure why really  Although I take loads of other people cycling.:lol:

I have looked at various mounting methods for my flying where I do take pictures and although not used it the various front mounted harnesses could be useful:
