I've finally got some photos I'd be happy to print out and hang at home.

While I've got frames with pre-cut mounts which are suitable for some, I have some that are unusual sizes - squares, 1x3 etc. and some I'd like more than one print in the frame.

Do any of you have recommendations for cutters and board to use to create your own custom mounts?

I've looked online and prices vary from the cheap (presumably copies) on Amazon to the mega expensive industrial stuff.

I'd only be framing a few, so it seems like it wouldn't be worth spending hundreds of pounds. Just wondering what a basic set-up would entail?

I mean, I already have A2 cutting mats, steel rules and scalpels, so I could do fairly simple vertical cuts, but it seems like it's that bevel cut that's all important on thicker material and keeping it square...

I use a Logan Compact Elite Mat cutter using 50x40cm boards - handles it easily and well, boards from Pinnacle, good quality and not expensive in reality, also get backing board from them, note I use double sided tape to hold the backing board on BUT Acid Free pro art tape to hold the print to the mount , otherwise later it can cause yellowing on the print paper - there will be cheaper but - every time you lok at it and the edges are overcut or not straight or the corners are not 90 degrees - it will nag you, seriously the extra is worth it for the result

Logan Team System 302 mount cutter and ruler, not cheap but good. I've been using mine since the late 90's and it just works unlike some of the plasticy ones out there for half the price.

Logan seems to be the go to, note that if you order via Amazon.com it’s 2-3 weeks delivery but they are often £100 or more less expensive than amazon.co.uk…

I use one of these: https://www.lionpic.co.uk/p/8271/Logan-Team-System-Plus-1010mm-Mount-Cutter-Kit

I mounted it on a sheet of 18mm birch ply, so that it's captive but can rise & fall so that I can insert the mountboard underneath. I find that having the rule mounted makes for more reliable and easier work than waving it about freehand. But I protect the ply surface with board offcuts - or you can get packs of sacrificial board strips for that very purpose.

I wouldn't consider a guide rule any shorter. You do need a bit of length before and after the cut ...
