Motorway commuting car recommendations

Lol it is not really what I said though isn't it? You may think it is quick, I'm merely saying it is nowhere as quick as you think it is.

As I say it depends on what you are used too and everything is relative.

For example come from a 1.6tcdi Ford and you think it doesn't hang about. Come from say a 335d and you'll be doing s Fred flintstone to help it move along a bit.

I'm not sure what bee you've got in your bonnet about it. I would have thought it is a rather simple and verifiable concept :thumbs:

mmmmmm yummy 335d (drooling). The only reason I never got one of them is because they don't come with a manual box, so settled with the 530D and modifications so I wasn't missing anything :rolleyes:

It is lovely and seriously powerful. A friend of mine got an xdrive version. Definitely would consider something like that as a replacement for the R. Then again some seem to suggest a Mondeo 2.0tdci is just as good/fast/quick all of the above . Roflmao choices choices ;)

I currently drive a 250PS Focus ST, 100PS more than the Mondeo and lighter so I'm more than aware how quick the 2.0 TDCi Mondeo is. As for a 1.6 TDCi, I drove a Ford Fusion 1.6TDCi a few years ago and surprised more than a few people with how quick it could accelerate. They struggled to get out of the way quick enough and it was more than capable of holding it's own against much bigger engine cars on the motorway too.
 
One car i quite like and not ashamed to say it is the Hyundai i40 with the 1.7 diesel engine, very pokey for a small block.

Also liked the 1.6TDI lump in the audi A1

Indeed. Thank you all for your comments so far. But as nice as buying brand new cars, I think I really can't stomach the 50% drop in value after 3 years.

I'm not in any hurry to buy right now, this thread is to get an idea on what to look out for. Before this thread, all I'd have looked at would be 3 series, C class, A4 and something from Volvo.

For reference, I currently drive a C220 C class coupe, it's not very fast by numbers, but fast enough on mway. I would prefer to driver a car that is able to accelerate with more urgency.
 
50% drop in 3 years is fine if you can negotiate 30-35% new car discount! Take a look at some of the Audi deals on broker websites

Same here. I never buy new. As long as you have a keen eye for cars and you know what you're looking for you can pick up a proper gem of a used car.

A c220 isn't slow. Trust me, I got banned for driving in one due to a high speed. The acceration wasn't far off my old e320cdi. It got to 130plus pretty smartly. What it wasn't was that smooth to drive. It just didn't waft the way a larger car did.

I'd look to the segment above the c,3,a4 segment. A car like a 530d, a6 3.0, s80 d5, x5, should be in your budget.
 
Blew up my 57 plate Vectra on my way back from a TPF meet on Thursday, estimated cost.......£1K - £3K. :(

It was a nice motorway car, good lazy engine & 50mpg




(water pump failed, took out the cam belt with possible snapped rockers / valves / pistons)
