If you are a media accredited motorsport photography, do you sell images to people for purposes other than news reporting?

Not after names or even your comments, but just interested in the raw data...

(this is off the back of a conversation I had with a couple of folks a few days ago)

Interesting so far...

Obviously rights are different for rally photographers - the forests are generally open and free for anyone to take and sell photos (obviously, so long as they're HMRC registered).

Might still be the same if you are signed on "media" though, not quite sure what being signed on means with a rally though as you say, there's no barriers to entry...

i'm just amazed that 7 people sell with success!

given the options.. you only need to sell one pic.. the only alternative option is to have sold none...

I have some salt if you want a pinch :)

For what i cover its a strict no go but still have seen several people selling through general online galleries or there web sites! Guess if its your balls are big enough to take the risk of loosing your accreditation for the season if caught.

i'm thinking it will just become the norm.. the more the pros have to compete with amateurs working for free, and the more that the media refuse to pay, the more the pros will have to use different methods to put food on the table.

Interesting that not one voter has said they pay for commercial rights licence...

Are we talking any motorsport or mainly higher class series, ie BTCC, BSB, F1 etc?

I'm only just starting out and so far all I'm doing is taking photos for a local motor club's magazine, but it's only sprints, autosolos, hillclimbs and the like. In return they're giving me trackside access and helping me spread my name and photos about.

I've already voted (option 1 BTW) but it's just occured to me that I most probably don't count, in which case I apologise :bonk:

The only rallying event that specifies images must not be sold without licenses being paid for is Wales Rally GB - an FIA event and round of the World Rally Championship.

For Rally GB we were paid to cover it by the media. We also have a seperate revenue stream with individual customers media, from which they get images (so effectively we don't sell the individuals images, they are just a benefit of using our media services)

What I'm talking about are events where you sign a piece of paper saying that your images you produce are only for news reporting only... which covers papers, magazines and quite probably the teams themselves for use in their press releases, but not retail items (tshirts, mugs, teaclothes etc)....

Which certainly to my knowledge is MotoGP, BSB, DTM and any event where you sign on at a MSV circuit... others may vary ;-)

I'd guess that its MSV as btcc don't takeover the whole operation at the circuit like Dtm, BSB or motogp do

I don't know, but I do know the piece of paper you sign with MSV says niet ;-)

Lol

after asking few press officers and event organisers(including msv, silversone, wtcc , dtm, etc) media passes will allow you to sell/use images for media purposes only, but not to sell those images to general public and teams for which you need a commercial license, now I believe this apply to most of the events, or if not, at least those of a certain level (btcc, bsb, dtm etc...)

Does anyone know how it would be viewed if a 3rd party contacts you wishing to purchase your images from a test event?
I'm not actively selling anything and the test was a multi formula general test at an MSV circuit with no singular overseeing organiser. Frowned upon???

I'd imagine it totally depends on what you sign... The standard MSV media form has exclusions, the sign on sheet for test days I don't think does...but that's what I am on about, people going against the terms they sign to... If it's not written in the contract then it's fair game...

MSV, is that a Russian thingy? :p

No, that's MVD :-P

I did a commercial shoot with a small race team at an MSV circuit a couple of years ago. The team wanted their 3 cars and drivers photographed in various poses on the grid and I pointed out that this was unlikely to happen. The team boss had a word with the circuit manager and we were granted permission to do the shoot during the lunch break of a test day. The only stipulation was that the circuit name was visible in some of the pictures.

I'm not sure if that adds anything to the debate but I thought I'd throw it out there. I'd also ask if anyone knows of anybody who has actually had a problem from a circuit regarding none media use of images? I once heard a tale of an accredited photographer being escorted of the premises at Oulton Park after he was caught handing out business cards in the paddock; I have no idea if that is true but it does suggest to me that the circuits by and large will tollerate this sort of thing as long as you don't take the ****.

From a personal perspective I simply don't bother trying to flog my pictures however if someone approaches me then I am happy to oblige.
