Motorist faces jail for assaulting cyclist

BTW, this is sounding like a Monty Python sketch with all your over the top scenarios of outdated and slow accelerating vehicles.
I don't think you can describe an Audi Coupe as lacking in acceleration.

3 litre Jag XF and MX-5 aren't exactly sluggards but can't always overtake cyclists safely on the A road we're talking about.

Calling cyclists outdated and slow accelerating is correct though! ;)

I nearly had a head on collision last week. A woman felt she had to give a cyclist so much room she came completely onto my side of the road and not far off hitting the kerb too.

I see that all the time, it even happened on my driving assessment a couple of weeks ago! The world would be a safer place if people were a little more patient!

A little more patience, an admittance of bigoted ideals and a little more acceptance would make the world a much less stressful place for us all...
Ive been guilty of all of the above in the past but a little self anyalsis tought me a lot.

Indeed, a little patience and some consideration on both sides.

I am very patient, I have no chouce, but to say I must change my vehicle to accomodate someone who could easily allow me to pass is just selfish. To be fair even a fast car would have difficulty on the road I use. Strange that a motorist talking about cycling is automatically dubbed an anti cycling danger.

How do all of the hgv's cope on this road? surely they are slower than you.
It sounds like a dangerous road, i think i would look for an alternate route if i was in your position.

It does seem that your complaint of cyclists (in this instant) is due to your choice of road and vehicle.

It is a dangerous road, HGVs cope the same way I do, driving at 15mph for 5 or so miles just as I do, you have to understand, its a very rural area, its a road that rush hour traffic uses to get out of Ipswich to the neighbouring towns, its a national speed limit B road, its a very busy road. Its a road that all traffic can and does use, that includes cyclists, and I have no problem with them using it as they have no problem with me using it, after all, we both (in laymans terms) have that privilage, and my complaint isnt with cyclists using the road, I am very much for people cycling, I would like to see more people doing it, my complaint is, if they rode like they are supposed to "be aware of traffic behind you" and then considered the fact that I might struggle to pass, then help me out a little. As I said, one chap does, and its greatly appreciated when he does.

I mean, for goodness sake, its common sense, if I cant pass, neither can anyone else, no one will try to pass me, a cars gap, then a cyclist, so behind me traffic builds up, if I do manage to pass there are usually cars built up behind me that will also pass, most will just pull out after me, and they cant see past me.

Cycling in a city, where I'm generally faster than motorised traffic, I have a problem with slow moving 4x4/SUV etc that are too fat for the road. Contrary to the highway code they're not checking their mirrors and pulling over to let me pass - instead hogging the road and holding me up. This is especially true with older vehicles, with the bonus they're kicking a load of diesel fumes from a crapped out exhaust into my face.

I best get the ramps at work swapped out, just in case one come through the doors needing its exhaust fixed and we cant get it on our standard ramps, any perticular models I should be looking out for?

I am not sure if I am recalling something that used to be in the highway code (I cant find it now) or back from my cycling proficiency test when I was a kid. But I have always known not to pull over (and keep cycling) into bus lanes/lay-bys etc. to allow traffic to pass as it is a dangerous manoeuvre. When you reach the end of a lay-by you are forced to rejoin the carriageway and if a vehicle has not completed an overtaking manoeuvre there is risk of a collision.

To let vehicles pass you would need to pull into a lay-by, stop, let the vehicles pass and wait for a big enough gap in the traffic to rejoin the road. Stopping and starting is a massive pain in the lycra clad derrière and if it is a busy road there may not be a suitable gap to rejoin the road for quite some time.

As for overtaking riders 2 abreast, I always found this info-graphic very good for explaining the logic path. It is pretty hard to argue unless you are stuck with the mentality of not having to leave the recommended 1.5m clearance for cyclists if it means getting to your destination a bit sooner.

Not contrary to the highway code.
They're not holding you up because of their vehicle's lack of ability, but because of the traffic/lights/crossings etc.

A bit of courtesy goes a long way between road users. And regardless of rights & wrongs, a cyclist should remember that they don't have a protective metal skin around them, and seeing a driver prosectued does nothing to heal broken bones and torn muscles.

As a driver I have no desire to hit a cyclist, though sometimes I can understand why people want to. As a cyclist I need to be aware of the motor vehicles around me at all times because I am easily damaged, and to show consideration to other road users.

I used to cycle to work a few times a week. I always tried to use roads where I would cause minimal disruption to motorists. If I was causing a hold up I would just stop at the side of the road, wave the vehicles through, then carry on.
There is a 40mph limit country road near me, that the lycra brigade use. Most times it is a lone rider and not a problem. But now and then I see groups of 2 or 3 that will ride two a breast. There is no need for that. Worse still the road has a railway bridge and the road is quite steep on both sides. They are only out for a ride, not commuting, why can't they use another route that would be safer for them and less of a hindrance for everyone else?

can I respectfully suggest you leave the discussion to those with the power of logical thought.
Of course you can. It may help if you know I'm a cyclist as well as a driver so I do see both sides. Roads are a shared resource but a significant number of both cyclists and drivers forget that.

Then there's those drivers who don't have the thinking skills to work out the effects of kerbside drains.

There's a road local to me that has a fairly wide cycle lane, but no yellow lines. So despite all the houses on the road having big enough drives for 3 cars, guess where they all park?

There's a cycle lane along the pathways from the end of my road pretty much all the way into town. It's great ... bar the ruddy pedestrians taking over it walking 5 abreast .... let's start on the pedestrians! ... oh, wait, that won't work because we are all one at some point

Have a go anyway. What the hell.

Horses, horses, don't get me started on horses.

:ROFLMAO:

Sometimes I wish they would just step to one side and allow me to pass them safely, especially the fat ones.
