Motorhomes anyone have one? rent one ? use one?

Yes my parents have taken my eldest and my nephew. They love it too. Not sure the Mrs is convinced yet but she puts up with it for the kids.

I remember one year on the Black Isle, went camping in tents and it was so cold we couldn't get the gas cooker lit after a night of no sleep. That was enough to convince darlin we needed a caravan haha

OK so from the other side:

Caravans/Motorhomes are good if you are going to use them regularly. When the kids were little we had trailer tents, went away 2 weekends a month, back then it was £6-8 a night to go to a haven site, camp and use all there facilities. Brilliant. We upgraded to a caravan and I hated it. More room, and everything was neater but the roof was very noisy when it rained and towing it was harder as it was bigger, heavier etc. Got rid of it after a couple of years.

Motorhomes - I drove a motorhome regularly as we had one for a paddock home when I engineered for a privateer racing a caterham. Cosy but worked ok, slow to go anywhere, we travelled everywhere at 50mph, towing a car on a trailer. Some of the others had large motorhomes, but then size becomes an issue in places. I know a couple of people who have bought them, nice vehicles but not really used then sold on.

Those with them - do you find you have to look at routes? I know of roads around Cornwall, Pembrokeshire etc that would be wholey unsuitable to anything bigger than a family car. We thought about looking again at them for holidays with the dog, but it just wasn't cost effective. There's plenty of small cottages you can hire cheaply everywhere.

When we were in France last summer there was a couple on the pitch next to us who had the most humongous motor home, and it was soooo plush inside (leather suite, fancy kitchen that was nicer than my home one!) it would have given a luxury yacht a run for its money. But it was longer than a bus so I would have been very nervous driving it anywhere that wasn't on major A roads - certainly wouldn't want to try it in a car park.

My one is shorter than a long wheel base transit, so can go anywhere a delivery driver can, I've even found supermarket car parks to be OK as long as you don't mind parking away from the door so that you can take a couple of spaces.

I do that in my car anyway, not the two spaces bit, rather to get away from the herd that slams doors into other cars while getting out

Mallory park was always funny, you have to drive part of the circuit to get into the paddocks. Some motorhomes had to take 3 or 5 point turns to get in off the circuit

LOL not just me then, IF you have to camp and have ALL the correct gear............ and, yeah right! its still pants if you dont have the weather But with a van you can at least get around a table in relative warmth and get out the Monopoly! or the UNO, Dobble or what ever takes your fancy! bottle of red or a nice crisp white from the fridge!!

Our most common place to go is St. Andrews as its so local and we have now got into the habit of touring the second hand shops during our wanders in search of the evenings entertainment. Usually a dvd and the odd book but it gives an incentive to get of your butt and explore. The blow heating in the van adds to the comfort and the sympathy for those around you in tents
