Motorbikes

not having much luck with the bike this week, yesterday a fine and today i lost my drift camera that i use as a rear view cam...must of fell off on the hardnott pass ...b****rdrift.jpg

Oh crap , I’ve got a drift camera that I use as a helmet cam , I did notice that you have to be so careful that the tabs are engaged it’s so easy to push it in and it looks like it’s secure and it’s not :(

Bike now SORNED for the winter, not that it did many miles this year anyway.

Being a few miles further warm less cold South than you, mine stay taxed all the way through. Used to SORN a couple but forgot to re-tax them in Spring so was stuck with less choice until the end of the month (I'm too tight to tax 'em after the 7th or any month! Never buy any vehicle after then either!)

Mine will definately not be used during the winter, it's getting on a bit now (03 plate) and it's still in good condition for a 21 year old vehicle and I don't want the salt getting at it.

Optimate plugged in for its winter slumber.

I have a couple of questions about that.

1. Do you take the battery off the bike or leave it connected?

2. Do you leave the Optimate connected and switched on all through the winter?

Cheers.

I plug in my battery (still in the bike) if I'm not riding for more than a few days and would leave it on for as long as I wasn't using it. It'll trickle charge, only using power when needed.

I connect the Optimate up for a day every week or two, rather than leave it on all the time
It’s not a problem in my case as we have 4 bikes between us
Not saying that leaving it on all the time is wrong just seems better to me to top it up once a week

My Optimate will be on until next spring. You fit a cable that allows the battery to be left on the bike. There are crocodile clips too if you want to charge it off the bike.

I have noting but praise for the continuous use of Optimate chargers, my little used 1997 ZX9R is still on it's first replacement battery from new.

Cable fitted to bike - Optimate plugged in.

I'll probably still have the odd day out through the winter but I'm happy to know it doesn't matter when, as far as the battery is concerned.

It does occasionally make it up on to the Moor though. Twice so far this year!

And again this morning!!!

AND, I was up there to see it!!!

I even took a couple of phonetos of the Bobber in (or near!) it.

Shame that caff in Princetown was still shut when I got there but it did mean I beat the walkers to Hexworthy Bridge and Coombestone Tor for the snaps with nobody in them...

I was bloody glad of the Irvin flying jacket and those sheepskin gauntlets before the Sun came up properly. Doesn't show in the pix but the bike's filthy now.

Looks like Malcolm's saved up a bit!

Enjoy it!

Having needed a pee (crouching from a stool can do that these days!!!) while changing the oil in Mrs Nod's Herald yesterday, I can vouch for the truth in the above!

Ina month, she'll hopefully have her full license (or at least have passed her test!)

Enjoy it!

Went for a short ride on Friday with Mrs Nod (needed to get her bike properly warmed up to change the oil) to make the most of the sunshine.

great 240 miles in the lakes today, just what the doctor ordered, nice to ride on dry ( if somewhat gravel strewn in lots of places) roads..rushed home to watch the match, should have taken my time but thats another matter,

i was thinking on riding to germany and poland next week, just to co-incide with the 80th anniversary of the great escape from stalag luft 3on the 25th of March, one of my favorite films and a bucket list of places to go( im going to stay in colditz castle too on my way back), BUT anyway sods law ive a dentist appointment on the 24th and ive only waited a month for it so i dont really want to postpone it any further...great plans of mice and men and all that

A friend on the MiL was one of the escapers. Met him a few times - lovely chap.

One of the lucky ones who didn't get murdered after his recapture.

ive looked at the weather and thought sod it il go wednesday to sunday, looked at staying in colditz and the tours and interesting stuff only goes on from april to october....b****r

For those interested (but running low on patience!), Allen Millyard's recovered and had been busy - here's a link to part 17 of the Nemesis restoration.

I have been following that regularly. He has recently rebuilt the entire induction system, with new throttle bodies and other lovely mechanical things. The guy is a genius and he always answers questions.

He's like that IRL too.

Unless there's any sort of camera around... Then the phoney accent and mannerisms come back!

Yesterday was Mrs Nod's first "big bike" training day. An hour on the "parade ground" to get her used to the way it feels at super low speeds and to acclimatise her to the different clutch technique and better braking from her 125. Then a shortish road ride to a larger area to practise some of the module 1 test manoeuvres before some real roads.

I'm staying well away from the whole process so I don't introduce any of my (probably bad!) riding habits into her riding.

Got some engine protector bars coming for the Bonnie for when she gets her full license!

"Dresser" bars arrived this afternoon and now fitted. Took longer to find the deeper socket I needed to torque up the engine bolt than it did to do the rest of the job! While I had an open order, I treated it to an oil temperature gauge (more of a pretty filler cap but does help keep an eye on the temperature inside the casing) and some long, knurled seat bolts. Just needs her to finish her part of the job next Friday...
